HG612 and Zyxel 8924
« on: December 21, 2015, 11:17:11 AM »

Since I'm still having some trouble with the Zyxel 8924, I was thinking to run the HG612 as the modem such that I am not at the mercy of the Zyxels stability.
Back story: v7 firmware on Zyxel gives stable internet, but suffers memory leak causing reboot. Newer firmwares suffer high FEC/min in the millions but are much more stable in terms of web ui and wifi.

The wifi performance on the Zyxel is excellent so I'd like to use it as the AP.

As the Zyxel is a bit flakey with v7 fw, DLM seems to keep training the line, so I'm thinking for stability sake I run the HG612 as modem. Am I right in saying that if the Zyxel is then rebooted that DLM will not care?

Also with the HG612, I notice you need to connect to LAN 2 for stats. Is it possible to run a single Ethernet cable with 2 ends at each end of cable using 4 of the 8 wires each?

What do you guys think?

if you have a separate modem and router then the DLM doesn't know or care what happens to the router.

yes it is possible to run 2x 100mbps links over a single cat5e cable, you can actually buy splitters to do just that.

That's neat, I have Ethernet plugs and a crimp tool so I guess I can just make my split cable.
Also thanks for confirming both those things.

There are lots of good dedicated WAPs around, including the Zyxel nwa3560-n one that I use, a dual 2.4 GHz + 5 GHz model. Its web UI is confusing and slow, but otherwise it just gets the job done with no drama. It can do multiple SSIDs and other nice things, as it's very feature-rich.

Just a thought for an alternative strategy.

I already own the 8924 though =/
Unfortunate that the new modem driver on the new more stable firmware's just wont play ball with my line, and the older fw's are buggy as hell.
