1. Many of Andrews & Arnold's (http://aa.net.uk) users now choose a fixed-cost, up-front charging deal such as the Home::1 deal or one of the various Office::1 offers.

2. However, here is an example (real) of how charges work out in practice for a reasonably typical month using the old, traditional "units-based" tariff where you buy a certain variable number of units which are used up at different rates according to the time of day and type of line.

Example:: Informational email from A & A to the user, as follows:

THIS IS NOT A BILL. This is just a statement of current usage levels.

Summary:- We do not expect any extra charges on your next bill.

You buy 15 units per month. You have 1.52 units extra under usage brought forward from last month making 16.52 units available this month. You have used 3.71 units so far this month. At this rate you will use 8.25 units this month. We forecast ending the month with 8.27 units under usage. Under usage means no extra charges are expected.

Remember, you don't have to choose this kind of charging plan. It can be the most economical deal for an extremely heavy user whose usage can be made flexible in the sense that the user can vary the time when they do things. I try to make as much use of the 1 TB per unit charging band as possible, but it's not always possible to schedule every kind of download.

Well i did check out the Andrews & Arnold web site last night and got so confused, could you do me a favour weaver and calculate my line FTTC 40/10 200GB monthly usage this line is a BT wholesale exchange only and most most of my streaming activity is done in the evening.

According to their web site, the Home::1 bundle would be £45 per month.  £25 basic, +£10 for the uplift to FTTC 40/10, +£10 for uplift from 100GB to 200GB.

Doesn't include PSTN line.   They'll do a line without calls for £10/month.  I'm seriously considering that, port my existing number into SIP.

1. Evenings are 50 GB per unit, so 200 GB is 4 units. I think the current £ / unit charging rate is £3.90, so that would be £15.60 for a start, for eve traffic only.

Remember that this is for traffic only so you also need to pay for line(s) and other services.

2. The base charge for FTTC is £22.20, so the grand total would be
22.20 + 15.60 = £37.80   =FTTC + 4 units (=200Gb eves)

3. Alternative estimate: [add on an extra £3.90 × 2 (say) for daytime rate usage]

If everyone is out all day every working day then fine, otherwise we have not made any daytime usage allowance and are going to be eating into your 200GB evenings. So if need be, add on some additional d GB daytime usage at int(d / 2.5GB) units, which is costing
    £ = (d / 2.5) × £3.90.

Example: guess of an additional daytime 5 GB,
units day         5 GB / 2.5 -> 2 units +
units eves  200 GB / 50 ->  4 units ( as before )

so total for [ FTTC + 4 units (=200 GB eves) + 2 units (=5 GB daytime) ] = £45.60

One thing that always grinds my teeth is this FTTC fee (Install Charge) when migrating from one provider to another I was able to get this fee waived by hard negotiations on the phone to new ISP.

I movd from BT to EE last May and with a 12 month contract with them but that never stops me looking into other broadband service providers I don't jump ship willy nilly until the monthly costs looks better than the current.
