I'm famously sceptical of the media paranoia and hysteria (as I see it) that has surrounded the so-called 'snoopers charter'.  And in expressing my scepticism, I'm aware I've ruffled a few feathers, and will probably ruffle again. :D

Equally, I consider RevK to be a fair expert in the field, to be well-intentioned, and to argue his cause very well.

I will follow this with interest. :)

I don't think you've ruffled any feathers. You just haven't enhanced your reputation.

Not sure if I'm the leftie, or RevK.

Unlikely to be me, but worth restating my own words on RevK...

Equally, I consider RevK to be a fair expert in the field, to be well-intentioned, and to argue his cause very well.

Personally then, I'd not see him as a leftie either, or a rightie, or as any kind of crank at all.   I respect him.   But all opinions are valid, it's a free country - so far.

I don't see how this is a left vs right issue.

The government's I'll-thought out proposals are impractical in part because they don't make sense due to ignorance about how the internet works, thinking everything is like the phone system or having naive guesswork ideas about how certain applications and services might work.

The other problem is that if driving software developers and service providers away from Britain because of nutty anti-encryption laws.

The assumption that if the government tells terrorists not to use encryption then they won't do so, well that's just xxx

I could go on and on without mentioning privacy or civil rights. I don't see how these things match traditional left vs right wing concerns.

Given your claim to be an app developer and given your stance on privacy, I wouldn't touch one of your apps with a barge-pole.

Fortunately I am thick skinned (or just thick :D) and not easily offended.

But  I do sometimes get the feeling that not all forum contributors are entirely persuaded to the concept of freedom of speech or expression?  :(
