I think that's due to the limited range and probably limited penetration of 5GHz

Which is, fortunately, to my benefit.  :D

I have no neighbours, effectively. (Does 50m count? - and through 6 ft-thick [!] stone gable-end wall of house.) That being so, I could perhaps give 2.4 GHz a try. Is it really a lot better in performance terms?

5Ghz has better performance, if you are close to the AP, ideally in the same room.
2.4Ghz has better range, may be better or worse in a different room depending on how good your 5Ghz signal is.
