I might able to get my beloved to help me, otherwise I could try to buy some alternative config  units from A&A, if they are feeling kindly disposed to me, or get them to take some back on at a time for tweaking, which would be such a monumental faff.

Think of me as an apprentice Stephen Hawking, same Theoretical Physics, but without the brain. Disability nowhere near comparable, as I can thankfully still get myself to the loo and back unaided.

I don't know if you already know, but the BROADFORD exchange now appears to have WBC ADSL2+ available. The WBC_National_Service_Migration_Schedule_Mar_2016_v1.xls file from here lists the availability date as 20/11/2015. A lot of the recently upgraded exchanges have comments such as "FM2000 site (Max daily migration rate is 48 lines Per Day)" with varying numbers of lines per day, 48 for Broadford.

I also checked with some random phone number I found on Google Maps in Broadford, which confirms WBC ADSL2+ availability.

With the attenuation of Weaver's circuits as high as they are, ADSL2+ will not be a sensible option. However ADSL2 may well be beneficial.  :-\

Yes, but an ISP can only provision a line as ADSL1 or ADSL2+. I think on newer exchange equipment, choosing between ADSL2+ and ADSL2 is either done automatically each time it connects, or it makes no difference anyway. My own 58 dB line is on presumably older TSTC 21CN equipment, and automatically will always end up operating as ADSL2+, but I get slightly more downstream and upstream bandwidth if I choose ADSL2.

If the line is provisioned as ADSL2+, then you can configure your modem for ADSL2 (or even ADSL1) yourself.

Yes, I agree entirely.

I don't know what to do next.

If I can get classified as 21CN, then I start saving some money. My daytime traffic charges will be halved for not being on 20CN.

I'll just throw the problem at A & A, I think.

I don't know what the real d/s attn will be, "63.5" dB is not real, I take it. The line presumably follows the road, you can actually see it in places lying in the heather. By road, it is 4.6 mi from the Broadford exchange.

@ejs  Thank you very, very much indeed Ejs for digging that (xls file) out for me, very impressed. Most thoughtful of you.

My suggestion is to enter each of your three numbers, in turn, and take a screen-scrape of each displayed result. Then send the images to A&A and ask for clarification.

Indeed. Let A & A do the work. I suspect I will need to get some modems locked to ADSL2 (as opposed to 2+) (although not too soon). The sooner the better.

* Are modems often set to auto in the sense that they will select either ADSL2+ or ADSL1 ?

I don't have a DLink DSL-320B-Z1 manual for some reason.

Q: what does the ISP do next?

(i) Do they get notification from BT (or do they have to poll)?

Do they then have to carry out some procedure (ii) with BT and (iii) the end user ?

Yes, many different models have been through my hands over the years, and by default they've (nearly) all had several protocols enabled, the decision about which to use being made during the sync negotiation.
