76/19 vs 38/9.5 and download vs upload speed ratios
« on: November 03, 2015, 05:44:20 PM »

My first post so be  gentle...

Question about speeds...

Have had ADSL for years.   Rock solid  8128/448.  Archer D9 router.

Fibre just being installed in village.

FTTC.  400m from cabinet   BTW site says 80   66.1     20   20  clean      80     57.1    20   17.1   impacted

Cabinet just been enabled  last week - Huawei 288   so plenty of space still.

My question:  let's suppose my line is good quality  and is capable of say 66 down.  Does this mean I will get 19 up or will it be 16.5   i.e. is upload always 1/4 download or can it be better than 1/4...

2nd question if I opt for 38/9.5    am I guaranteed that because my line is capable of 66  or will be  proportional i.e. half of 66
i.e.  33/8

If all this is explained somewhere else then point me at it please.

Hi and welcome to the forums.

Upload and download are not directly related, there's many factors that can affect them.

You can never really tell what you are going to get unless you are really close to the cab,  your estimate may also be well out. Also as time goes on your speeds will chang,  this can also affect different connections in different ways,   I used to get 50/12  now I  get 47/6.

OK so upload is not 1/4 of download and can vary up and down...

What about the second Q.  Say my line is rock solid CAPABLE of 50/12  for arguments sake but that I opt for the 38/9.5 product  does that mean I will get 38/9.5 since my line can do it or does the system just divide my "capable" speeds by 2.

You will get the max speed as it's a cap not a ratio.

I started off on the 80 20 for 18 months contract although I knew I would not get those speeds I did know I would get more than 40 10 and did get 60 (cant remember upload speed).

After a while speeds dropped a bit but still above 40 10, so I down graded at end of contract.

I found this speed test to be the most accurate.

I now have 40 8.

No matter what product you sign up for you will get the maximum speeds your line will support up to the product limits. If that sounds vague it's because it is as every line is different.
