BT HH5A losing PPPoE but DSL stays up.
« on: October 12, 2015, 09:39:51 PM »

I posted this on the BT forum about this issue.

Basically the HH5 loses the PPPoE connection but the DSL stays up.

The HH5 will display an orange power light but there will be no orange broadband light - Neither flashing or static.

The weird thing is when I try to go to a website there will be a page pop up say - It appears your Home Hub is having a problem connecting to the internet and the broadband light is flashing. Or something along those lines. I follow the page where it asks if I am using DSL or WAN. I choose DSL, Then the next page says it is attempting to reconnect the broadband and the PPPoE is up and running again.

I am on Infinity 2 by the way. I noticed my noise margin dropping too and my maximum data rate getting slower. Also my line attenuation seems to go up or down. I think it is because I have been resetting the HH5 after I get everything working again.

Here is my post on the BT forum as I posted links to different ISPs having similar issues over the years and the like. The latest one was from Zen on September 23rd, my issue first happened on September 25th -

https://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity-Speed-Connection/PPPoE-Keeps-getting-lost/td-p/1544797

I have very limited knowledge on this particular issue but all I know is it is not right. From my little research it seems this points to BTs side. Or perhaps my HH5 is at fault. My data rate on the HH5 still stays at 20000/79995 despite all of this happening.

This was copied from my HH5 event logs/from my thread on the BT forum. I got this exact same message on the 25th. -

17:26:56, 12 Oct.   (19425.560000) PPPoE is down after 322 minutes uptime [Disabled] <<WHY DOES THIS ALWAYS GET DISABLED?
17:26:52, 12 Oct.   (19421.110000) PPP LCP Send Termination Request [User request]

Help would be appreciated,
Thanks.
Mark.

You can rule out the HH5 by using a modem with another router instead, if you have one.

Have you tried a factory reset of the HH5?

I unfortunately do not have another router to try just the HH5 itself.

I did try my Openreach ECI modem with the HH5 but the HH5 still stayed orange even when restarting the Hub. But all the lights on the modem were green and operational.

I did not try a factory reset yet. I do not have a pin or pen to press into the recess button on the back. Looking through the HH5 manager it says I can factory reset it via this. Would it work doing it through that?

Welcome to the Kitz forum.

Looking at those two lines we see that there is a link control protocol (LCP) termination request sent by the modem/router (logged at 17:26:52) and four seconds later (at 17:26:56) we see that the PPP server takes down the current PPPoE session as a direct result of the prior LCP termination request.

I performed a quick Google search of the Kitz site and came up with this list. Of all the entries in that list, this one matches what you have observed. (And I see that a certain old black cat even posted to that thread!  ::)  ) Here is the opening post of the thread and here is the actual post found by the above Google search. Please have read through that thread and see if it helps . . .  :-\

Remove the patch cable that connects the HH5 to the line (xDSL port to the filter (centralised or micro)) and use an opened up paper clip or something similar to press and hold the recessed reset button for, at least, ten seconds. All the LEDs should go out / come on / flash / etc. Wait a few minutes and then reconnect the HH5 to the line by reinserting the patch cable.

I strongly suspect that your problem is being caused by the HH5.  :-X

Thank you very much also for the reply.

I am just very confused on this matter, I am such a newbie on why this is happening. I decided to use kitz for advice as I find on the BT forum there is not very useful replies. I usually get ignored for whatever reason.

But I will have a look at this thank you. I just cannot figure out why my PPPoE gets disabled and never comes back until I use that page that pops up.  ???

I will try this also with the HH5 and see if that helps. Again thank you. I do have a feeling it is the HH5 itself.

The PPPoE session is taken down by the server, "at the other end of the link", as a result of an instruction (the LCP termination request) being sent to the server by the client (the HH5) "at your end of the link".

That is also my conclusion.  :(

I understand how this works now, thanks for the explanation.

I wish I could buy a more reliable router or VDSL2 compatible one but financially I am not in the luxurious position to buy anything.

I will do all this when all the folks are asleep in bed, I suffer from insomnia so any oddities I experience first hand.

I may try connecting the HH5 to my ECI modem in future if it continues. Or try getting a new HH5 sent out to me. :)

I hope I did this correctly - I removed the dsl cable from the back of the Hub, and obviously it light up orange with a flashing red b light. I found a pen and pushed it in the recess button until it turned green indicating it was doing the factory reset.
And I waited until it eventually went orange again with the flashing red b indicating it was complete. So I put the dsl cable back into the Hub.
I noticed it was much faster this time around connecting and getting the blue power light. Hopefully that is a good sign already.

Also I did this without turning off or powering down the Hub first. You do not mention needing to do this so I assume I did it right with it all powered on with what I did above.

I guess the next step will be to monitor this now.

I should have mentioned I am in contact with a BT moderator from the BT forum, do you think it would be worth mentioning this to him?

Anyway time to pass the time with my insomnia wonderful lol.  ::)

That was just "purrfect".  ;)  You assumed correctly and performed the task exactly as I would have done.

I guess the next step will be to monitor this now.

Yes, precisely.

I should have mentioned I am in contact with a BT moderator from the BT forum, do you think it would be worth mentioning this to him?

Most definitely. I would suggest that you also provide a link to this thread (which is http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,16308.0.html).

I have quickly looked through the logs that you provided and did not notice anything untoward. At present it all looks good. I'm sure other Kitizens will also be taking a look and if anything seems suspicious they will comment.

Thank you very much burakkucat for being patient with me. You seem very supportive especially with someone like me who is learning the ins and outs about these things.

I am glad I followed your instructions correctly.  ;D

So I will keep an eye on it now, good thing I do not really sleep as I can see if it goes well through the night lol.

Also I shall link the moderator from BT to this forum and perhaps me and him and perhaps other parts of BT can learn from this oddity I have experienced. ;)

Good to see everything is looking good thus far, stats wise and from the event log - Fingers crossed!

If you are still around and awake, what does a factory reset do exactly? From my understanding it puts everything back into its original state on the Hub side. I guess this will have some bearing on the other side of things such as the Infinity cabinet, exchange and the like.

Just about to depart for the sleepy-spot.

Yes, correct. The BT HH5, just like all other modem/routers, contains an embedded computer. All modern day computers use an operating system and that operating system needs to be configured to do the appropriate tasks. The software and configuration code exists in an entity termed the firmware. On the HH5, the firmware can be remotely upgraded by the BT systems "pushing" newer firmware onto the device. Those persons who are well experienced with upgrading the firmware of modem/routers will have a "feeling" for when a factory reset may be beneficial. In your case, I suspect that newer firmware image has been "pushed" onto the HH5 and a factory reset will ensure that it operates exactly as designed. Think of it as a "just in case" action.

In the broadest terms, yes. The modem part of the HH5 communicates with the equipment in the green street-cabinet. The router part of the HH5 establishes the higher level protocols with remote servers . . . one such protocol is the point to point protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE). And it was PPPoE which was being terminated as a result of the HH5 sending a link control protocol (LCP) termination request.

Brilliant a very big thank you for putting things in such an easy to understand perspective!  :D

I guess that is why it looked like the HH5 connected up faster this time around after following your instructions.

I shall leave you be for now as some can actually get sleep, unlike me.  ::)

Once you are up and about later or maybe another member could help me identify what cabinet I am on. I know the HH5 firmware .11 supports G.INP but I am not sure if my cabinet is Huawei or ECI.

I know there is a website where you can find out which cabinet you are connected on.
All I know is I am on cabinet 18 but do not know if it is an ECI or Huawei cabinet, I never pass it despite being close to it somewhere lol.

Anyway take care for now.  :)

I think you're on an ECI cabinet, given the speed you're getting on the HH5A. But it's very easy to find out either by looking up your exchange here https://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm or just by confirming your exchange or locality or postcode and I'll look it up for you.
Detailed instructions here http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/cabinet-lookup.htm

I think I may be doing something wrong as it will not show a vendor I am on which is odd.

I looked up on SamKnows and I am connected to the NESU exchange. Cabinet 18 as I previously stated. I hope that is enough to go by. :)

Hopefully you have better luck than me Dray.
