USB3<->GigE adapter
« on: September 26, 2015, 02:50:04 PM »

I don't normally start a thread to recommend a product but these are very nice (894Mbps using iperf to test on a HP Spectre x360 - too thin for a RJ45 socket) :

http://www.ebuyer.com/483489-startech-com-usb-3-0-to-gigabit-ethernet-nic-network-adapter-10-100-1000-network-usb31000sw

If you don't use ebuyer then they're widely available for £15-25. I think its a handy thing to have.

Edit - if you don't have USB3 then it drops back to 100Mbps (tested) & works with all major OS/distros without driver install. Dunno about macs but its white so... :D

I have one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Portable-Ethernet-backwards-compatibility/dp/B00M7MYFAU/ref=sr_1_5?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1443278910&sr=1-5&keywords=plugable+usb+3+hub+gigabit

MAC,linux, ChromeOS and windows compatible with 3 port hub and 1000Mb networking; (ASIX AX88179 chipset) there is also a version available without the hub.

Yeah that's the chipset, works like a charm :)

Edit - even the Acronis (universal) boot disk recognises it so I'd say its Linux-friendly.

Funny you should mention this as I have just got a combined USB3 hub + Gigabit Ethernet
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabit-Ethernet-Converter-Support-Windows-White/dp/B00KGVP71U/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top?ie=UTF8
Neede the USB3 and thought the Gigabit would be a useful addition for emergency use etc.

Not even tried the Ethernet connection yet !!  ;D ;D

I'm just recommending the USB adapter/chipset as its zero hassle and it will (IME) boot/restore a machine from a networked backup (Win7/8.1 with a TPM/UEFI). Edit - it'll do *nix stuff too but might run at 100Mbps default.

That is what I bought mine for (needed it after my failed upgrade to Win 10).

I bought the anker device first but that did not work without installing drivers (returned to amazon) then tried the plugable one...as you say perfect.

Thanks for the Heads up.
I had been looking at a number of similar devices and missed the requirement for a driver on the Anker Product as others did not!!
I may also return it as this is inconvenient  :(
Glad I responded to this post  ;D ;D

Update:

Just checked and I guess you are referring to Linux not needing a driver as there are drivers supplied with both the Anker product and the Pluggable product for Windows and Linux ?
I did research the product carefully and the comments include a statement that the Hub & Ethernet worked without having to install any drivers on Windows 7, which was the criteria of importance to me.
That is why I assumed no Driver was needed.
I need to test it out and see what the issue are if any.  ;D
May not be a problem after all.
