TD-W9980 stats v BT's Hub 5 - my experience
« on: September 24, 2015, 11:52:40 PM »

Hi guys. I've had the W9980 for 17 days now and check my stats twice a day. I haven't had a DSL or PPP notice now for the past 14 days.

I only had the Hub 5 in place for about 3 weeks prior to the change. In that time my Max Downstream went from 58255 up to 622235. Speedtests showed me averaging 9.33Mbps up and 37.05Mbps down.

These were my last BT Hub readings
6. Data rate:   9999 / 39952
7. Maximum data rate:   20042 / 62235
8. Noise margin:   13.3 / 13.2
9. Line attenuation:   22.1 / 17.8
10. Signal attenuation:   22.0 / 17.8

Since installing the W9980 my Max rate downstream has ranged from 55021 to 51758, quite a drop from the performance of the BT Hub. The latest speedtests show speeds of 8.94 Up and 37.38 Down

These are the most recent stats taken this evening
    Upstream   Downstream
Current Rate (Kbps)   9999   39998
Max Rate (Kbps)   20253   51758
SNR Margin (dB)   13.5   9.7
Line Attenuation (dB)   22.6   18

The only change in my setup since changing routers has been installing a pair of powerline adapters.

Should I be concerned by the drop in Max Downstream rate, and if so, is there anything I can change within my router settings, or look out for in my settings, that could improve things as they currently stand?

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Max rate is a notional figure which seems to vary with noise margin and the level of interleaving. It is not your sync speed.

You connection looks to have improved perhaps because your new modem supports G.INP which your previous HH5 did not.

There's nothing wrong.

As you are on the 40/10 Mbps service, as shown by --

Quote from: HH5
6. Data rate:   9999 / 39952

-- and --

Quote from: TD-W9980
Current Rate (Kbps)   9999   39998

-- then the excess "head room" will allow some cross-talk, for example, to occur without any impact on your synchronisation speed and, thus, your throughput speed. Looks good, to me.  :)

Again, good to know, thank you both for the reassurance. Really pleased with the router as opposed to the Hub 5 (which was a nightmare). Have a lovely weekend guys.
