Firmware
« on: September 16, 2015, 02:59:06 PM »

I have been given off 'freecycle'
Plusnet Technicolor TG582n

Orange BrightBox

EE BrightBox

Can the above be put back to 'Generic Firmware' to unlock them ?.
Do you know where I can get firmware ?.

I only want to use them as WiFi Access Points  ;)

The Plusnet 582n firmware is not locked, and should be fairly close to a generic firmware, if there is such a thing for Technicolor devices. You'd probably need to use the telnet interface to disable its DHCP servers etc. to use it as a wireless access point.

You say they are not locked down, well there seem to be a lot of the isp's settings you can not get rid of !.

I think I have found some firmware anyone any idea how to install it.?

There's a Windows application: http://www.binarybob.plus.com/thomson/Windows%207%20Upgrade%20Tool.zip
I don't know if it works on later versions of Windows, you might need to try running it in some compatibility mode.
Or it should be possible over tftp: https://support.aa.net.uk/Router_-_TG582N_-_Firmware_and_Factory_Reset

This page seems to be down currently, which has some guidance and links to the firmware files and software to do the upgrade: http://community.plus.net/library/hardware/how-to-upgradedowngrade-the-firmware-on-the-thomson-585v7/

NB: There are two different hardware models of 582n, DANT-1 and DANT-T, Plusnet's is DANT-T and the firmwares are not interchangeable.

Hello!

- You may try to configure via CLI if the firmware provides access to it!

- Otherwise, you may try to upload this firmware: http://1drv.ms/1MteLFO for TG582n ... close to generic

- If even that (or any other) firmware does not work, you might still be able to configure the router as either a Modem in bridge mode or a Wireless Router only via the Thomson Configuration Wizard!

- For your original purpose of using it as a Wireless Access Point only ... just disable the DHCP server on the router!

Hope this helps!

Ahmed

Thanks.
One small problem I only use Linux . :o Not Windows .

Firmware is  8.C.M.0 DG  DANT-T

I can 'Telnet' into it> MENU> software =
The software = 8.12.22.0.0 build ZX2UDG8

There is a 'Force the gateway into LAN upgrade mode (ctrl-BOOTP)

Any idea what to do from this mode ?.

Look up BOOTP protocol.
It is similar to DHCP but also allows a boot image to be assigned, which I assume is how the firmware is transfered.
The functionality is partially merged into a DHCP server.
There are open source BOOTP servers but not sure where to find off top of my head.

Hello Again!

For your intended use as Wireless Access Point, you may disable the DHCP server from the router's web interface ... won't need to replace firmware! You may also try to run the "Thomson Configuration Wizard" and select the appropriate Template file (.tpl extension) using WINE under Linux or via a Virtualized Windows Environment under Linux to configure the router! Similarly, the "Thomson Upgrade Wizard" can be tried under Linux to update the firmware!

You may also use (depending upon the access level) the CLI to configure the router like shown here: http://blog.laaz.org/tech/2009/03/11/st780-wan-through-lan/
Note: To delete previous connection(s), you have to work in reverse detaching the interface(s) one by one like the opposite of what's shown here: http://support.alcadis.nl/files/get_file?file=Technicolor%252FBusiness%252FEOL%2B-%2BEnd%2Bof%2BLife%252FTG605s%252FManuals%252F6xx_internetconnection_en.pdf

If you would like to (force) update via BootP you need to issue
Code: [Select]
software upgrade at the CLI prompt as per http://help.demon.net/files/2013/03/TG582n-CLI-Guide.pdf
and use tftp to try to update the firmware ... a method for windows is used here http://www.jonathandavis.me.uk/2013/12/flashing-generic-firmware-on-a-technicolor-tg582n/ but tftp on Linux is also available!

Hope this helps!

Ahmed
