Switches from TP-Link, Netgear or HP
« on: August 29, 2015, 03:50:19 PM »

Does anyone have any experience of using TP Link switches? I'm thinking about getting another one.

I'm also thinking about Netgear as I've had a trouble-free experience with one for many years.

I did also think about HP, but RevK, of AAISP, has just bought a bad HP unit, which has put me off. If I remember correctly one contributor to kitz suggested HP.

I've had netgear gigabit switches (unmanaged) in my network for years now, never had any issues.

Yes my Netgear switch is unmanaged, and as I said earlier, no problems. The TP link switch which went weird was managed and had a lot of incomprehensible and poorly documented functionality which just got me into a lot of trouble.

I would like to be able to control QoS and maybe exploit some VLAN features, I don't know, but it would have to be documented to such a level that it is comprehensible to a complete idiot.  ;D

Mine was an unmanaged Gbe Netgear which served well for many years.
It was only retired due to me downsizing my network and getting rid of as much cable as I could on to wireless.

This one looks quite good. :)

But more seriously, Ebuyer have a fair selection: http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Networking/cat/Switches/subcat/Switches---Managed

Another nice touch,  "people who viewed this item ultimately bought" and then there is a £37 keyboard!

I have unmanaged Gb switch on my network :

TP-Link TL-SG1008D 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Desktop Switch

Works fine and is 'invisible' i.e. I switched it on and forgot about it.  Sounds like you are looking for something a bit more fancy though ....

I also use TP-Link Homeplugs and find them to be as good as any others, I also have a TD-8980 modem-router I use as a WAP ....in general the TP-Link gear I have is reliable and functional

I have a few TP-Link around the place - they all work fine.

I think I once did a test on the main (edit - this is a TP-Link rack unit) 16-port switch in the garage (32Gbps claimed) & got about 23Gbps but that's probably more to do with clients & possibly my dodgy wiring (there's something amiss on one segment which causes it to drop to 100Mbps now & then, not got annoyed enough to check it yet).

I used Netgear for years (so far back they were called Bay Networks) then they had some QC problems mid 00's so I looked around & found I'd been paying over the odds for mediocre products (in reliability terms - I was buying the business/enterprise stuff). Not used them since other than for ADSL2+ routers.

HP - probably wouldn't consider them for unmanaged as they cost too much for what is a basic switch.
