Broadband faster on laptop than desktop.
« on: March 06, 2008, 02:26:02 PM »

Hello,

I have a desktop pc running xp sp2 connected wirelessly with a speedtouch 121g usb device to an orange livebox, both supplied by orange. My other computer is a laptop running vista 32bit. The laptop is behind to many walls to get a good connection from the livebox so I use a hawking extender (HWREG1) to link the livebox to the laptop upstairs. This set up works very well. Oddly, however, the desktop only gets just above 2Mbits on an 8Mbit connection while the laptop can reach speeds of upto 6Mbits.!? Is there a simple explanation of this and can I get the speed up on the desktop?

Cheers.

Hi and welcome. The only thing I can think of is that the USB port on the desktop is slow. Maybe someone who uses Windows can add something to that.

[Edit] Looking into this a bit more, one of the standard USB modes is the Low Speed mode which is supposed to have a throughput of 1.5 Mbps, and is intended for use with things like mice and keyboards. I wonder if the USB port on the desktop has got stuck in this mode?

Do you know how to check the speed of the usb port and
change it to a higher speed?

I can't unfortunately. As you've probably gathered from my forum decorations, I don't use Windows. Hopefully someone else will come along soon.

When it comes to actually setting the port mode, I thought this was a matter for the device drivers?

With the Speedtouch modems there was a driver update available which changed the USB port mode after DSL Max became widespread, allowing greater USB throughput to match that of the DSL connection. Apparently the downside is that it can hog the USB bus causing slow downs with other USB devices.

Another consideration might be is the port the wireless adaptor is connected to USB 1.1 or USB 2.0?

The latter offers much higher speeds by default. If you are plugged into a front panel USB port, it may be to the slower spec depending on the age of the computer. If you haven't got any USB 2.0 ports, you may find buying a cheap 2 port PCI card worthwhile, if not for your present devices, anything you may get in future.

Ok. Will give the PCI Card a try.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Not sure if this is posted in the correct section but I thought
I would start where I left off.

Decided to install an ethernet port in the spare PCI slot.

Worked well - speeds up to that of the laptop - Thanks for the advice.

The reason I'm back however is that my uTorrent no longer works.

Still have the Speedtouch 121g USB wireless monitor and
it has a seperate IP address from the D-Link DGE-528T Gigabit
Ethernet Adapter.

The utorrent port is forwarded for both IP Adresses in the
Orange Livebox using the TCP protocol. (Have tried it with UDP aswell).

Utorrent will only accept incomming connections when connected
to the livebox wirelessly and not when connected via the cable.  :'(

Once again, any help greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Have you got a firewall "protecting" the Local Area Network connection and not the Wireless?

Looks if that could be it.
Running comodo.
Will investigate further.
Thanks again.

Turned out is wasn't comodo.
Seems I was forwarding the same port
to two IP addresses. ???
Didn't think that would matter if you only used
one at a time.
Sorted anyway.
