I think a better approach is to analyse the mail headers and find out where it originated from using http://mxtoolbox.com/EmailHeaders.aspx

That is certainly a different approach, but in what way is it a better one?

Because you can see the IP address it came from

But you can only trust it of you have reason to trust the website that analysed it.   I have no reason at all to doubt the authenticity of the link you posted but equally, I have no reason to trust it.

As such I personally would not advocate posting personal email headers into that analysis tool, owing to the potential privacy risk.   If you are personally acquainted with the website operators that would be different, but I am not.

And even if is genuine, what will the IP address tell you?  If it is not one assigned to BT it could still be genuine, if BT had simply subcontracted out the work of sending mass mail shots.

BT are unlikely to subcontract work to a dial-up account in China.

cant tell from your screenshot but locally i would know within seconds.

1 - check headers for real sender.
2 - hover over the links in email to see the actual web address it goes to.

@Chrysalis

You are right!

In both Outlook & Thunderbird it is possible to display the Headers on screen a quick scan would tell you quickly if it was Genuine or not.

If you want to export the email as a .eml or similar and post it as an attachment, I am sure Chrysalis or myself could give you an answer quite quickly.
