Windows 10 to Windows 7
« on: August 24, 2015, 02:04:55 AM »

Iv'e had Windows 10 on my PC for a while now activated (Upgraded from Windows 8.1) can I do a clean install of Windows 7, then go back to Windows 10 when I feel its "Finished" do a clean install and it will still be activated?

If you can take a disk image of your drive as it is now you can try it out.
This gives you the ability to at least restore back to the win10 you have now.
MS gives you 30 days to try win10, during this time you can roll-back to Win8.1 (your original OS) from within win10. (I would still image 1st for protection)

The theory is that once you have activated win10 the key is associated with your machine via a calculated unique id.
You can do a clean install of win10 over your current build and the activation is still there. [Done this and it works]

If you are within the 12 month 'Free Offer' this should work. (Remember win10 Upgrade only free during 12 month period from 29th July, after it is a chargeable item)

I have not reverted to win7 and back to win10 so can only tell you what is supposed to work.
Cover your back by making a full image backup.
If you restore this at a point when Win10 is 'Better' it will automatically update to the latest version once it is running and on-line.

Right Click Start Menu button
Settings
Update & Security
Recovery

2nd item down list is:
Go Back to XXXXXXX (Will say Windows 7 or Windows 8.)
Click the 'Get Started' Button.

I have not run this but some people have reported it not working / hanging.
Standard Advice: Image backup drive before you try this or backup all needed data so you can restore if you need to do a clean Win7/8 install from scratch.  ;D

Remember you only have 30 days to do this from Win10 Install/Update.

Yet another 'Good Idea' from MS is the 30 day timeout on being able to revert back from win10.

As they have already made the backup and it is not stopping win10 from running, why not just leave it there so you can revert when you like.
I have read it deletes the backup after 30 days !!??  :o  >:(
(Cannot confirm but sounds about right as there is a timeout)

Sorry to say i'm rolling back to Windows 8.1 as i type from a disk image it's not for me there are diriver issues like the time we moved from XP to VISTA in time i am sure it will be sorted out, can't even run a dvd or music file or watch TV out of the box you need third party software

I'll be back to Win10 in a years time when it becomes a media OS again.

@NewtronStar

Nothing to be sorry about  ;D

Lucky escape ..... It will only get worse once MS ramp up the monitisation plan.

Latest figures from MS say they have 75 Million PC's etc on Win10, in roughly 1 month.
I wonder what the figure will be in another month.  ;D ;)

Yeah back to windows 8.1 the image restore took about 30 mins  though the image backup took about 1 hour 30 mins very strange.

Now it's back to Windows 8.1 I'm getting the windows 10 is ready to be installed how can you remove this ?

Ah just did my own google search and this looks like a method http://www.askvg.com/how-to-remove-get-windows-10-app-and-its-icon-from-taskbar/

Update Windows10 upgrade removed on Windows8.1 and new updates arrived for 8.1 that's good it shows the removal of the Win10 update has been successful and any updates are just for Win8.1.

PS Win8.1 is just way faster than Win10 it has been since the preview and now after running the full retail version/free of Win10 MS has done another Vista but my original Vista is even faster.

@NewtronStar

Good link, covers everything possible to get rid of GWX.exe :)

Thanks will be doing the same to my win7.
W10 is getting worse and I don't need anything it gives me beyond Win7.
(Still looking at Linuxes, trying to get comfortable with one as my Desktop.)
