Ah, I had version 1.2 and I see they are up to 1.3.1, I'll give that a go to both the NAS (after it's finished its backup) and a computer on the Ethernet.

Given the sheer number of issues with both versions of HH5, why not just unlock your HG612 and install B030SP08 from http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,14262.0.html and then get a decent but cheap non DSL router like these http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/store/wifi-routers/wifi-routers-ac/?t=1287,2,36&sort=3#Content ?

What sort of wireless performance from WLAN to LAN do you yourself get with one of these cheap DSL routers then?

Okay, I had a think about this and I have a bonus question - which Ethernet port on the hub are you using, as they aren't all the same? (Just counting in from the left in Home Networks->Devices is fine, no need to crawl around anywhere.)

One issue with going to another hub is the difficulty of getting the manufacturer to say what the WiFi to LAN bandwidth is like, I tried. Plus it's not like other hubs don't have their issues. Also for WAN stability I can use the HG612 with the 5a or just have the 5b so that's not so bad.

I'm not sure if it blowing new firmware into the modem gets me anything other than access to statistics for the loss of a hub Ethernet port I don't have spare? (I did download the Gui/08 firmware a while back, although the Modem seems to have updated itself to BT's latest in the early hours of the 6th so I assume it has G.Inp anyway (at least the hub rebooted due to the modem, so that's my assumption).

What sort of wireless performance from WLAN to LAN do you yourself get with one of these cheap DSL routers then?

I don't buy cheap stuff :P

Both myself and friend of mine are IT consultants and he tried the HH5a for about a year before giving up and buying something much better.

As for cheap, there are numerous people on this forum with mid to cheaper devices than I buy who would give you good advice on am sure.

Here's my numbers with the HH5b:

A is a Win7x64 computer with an 877.5 Mbps 802.11ac connection to the HH5b
N is a Qnap NAS with a full-duplex 1Gb Ethernet connection to the HH5b
B is a Win7x64 computer with a full-duplex 1Gb Ethernet connection to the HH5b and completely different hardware to A

From B to A: 19.9 MB/s Write, 17.6 MB/s Read
From A to B: 18.6 MB/s Write, 20.4 MB/s Read

From A to N: 14.3 MB/s Write, 20.3 MB/s Read
From B to N: 25.9 MB/s Write, 76.6 MB/s Read
(The NAS slowed from well over 40 MBps writes about three firmware versions ago, so I'm hoping they fix that soon.)

The NAS is on LAN3 and the Computer on LAN4, although as they are all going to the same Broadcom Ethernet switch I assume it doesn't matter.

I'm not trying the full set of tests on the HH5a right now as I need my Broadband speed to recover from the problems, so probably won't meddle with the HH5b for three weeks unless something goes wrong. The Read speed with the HH5a from A to N was clearly quite a bit better though. The NAS was on LAN3 on the HH5a as well.

(Edit) When I had computer A connected to the NAS via LAN it got the same speeds that B did here (after the firmware update that is).

Is this using a USB dongle or a built-in wireless card or what?

Asus PCE-AC68 PCIe card:
http://www.trustedreviews.com/asus-pce-ac68-802-11ac-pci-e-adapter-review
using the antenna stand (rather than attaching them to the back of the card).

I am using a Netgear D7000, give me an example test you want me to perform etc, the full parameters etc of the test. My wireless cards in my laptop are limited to 2 radio Intel 7260 mini pcie so 866 etc, can't give you the full 1200 test as I gave my ASUS pcie 68U to a friend :(

As per reply #30

Just use LAN test lite http://www.totusoft.com/lanspeed1.html to a folder on your LAN

Laptop -> Wifi -> Router -> LAN -> Server -> Folder and use a 100 MB file

Rather annoyingly the HH5b crashed and recovered this morning (just before I got up), which I'm not that impressed by, as the only things happening overnight were my iPhone/iPad doing occasional mail checks, or whatever they do.

The log said: "System start Button press (PowerButton)"

Maybe I have very strong Spiders? (The firmware didn't get updated.)
