Can anyone recommend a good FTP program?
« on: August 17, 2015, 04:14:18 PM »

Sometimes I send stuff to my friends. At the moment I used Trillian as my Instant Messanger, so I have Trill itself on there, plus a Yahoo account on there too. The IM is great, but when it comes to transfering files its becoming more and more of a hassle. For some reason Trillians own network now doesn't let me send files, it just hangs for me, and doesn't even notify the other person. So I try to send it via Yahoo through Trillian.. that works sometimes. It's becoming a hassle. For small files email attachment is ok. But I'd like to setup some kind of FTP program that will be quick and easy.

I used to use WS FTP program.

What do people recommend? A quick and easy FTP program?

Yep. I occasionally use the Windows version of Filezilla with no issues whatsoever, even with files 500MB or more in size.

I use Filezilla too. It's been a while though, and I wonder if one can now script sessions, that would be good.

+1 for FileZilla. Never had an issue, even with large files.

I would like to find an FTP program that works like make, in that it (optionally) doesn't send things unless they have changed or are new.

'Changed' ought to mean a choice of using true differencing or be simply date-based.

Hi weaver

We use various FTP programs, depending upon the need at the time, but my preferred FTP program is Ipswich

I would think you might want to look at cobian backup, which is a backup program, but has FTP capabilities and can be tailored to differential or incremental, and is free, can be used as service, with vss

I hope that helps

Many thanks

Interesting program 'Cobian Backup'.

Just had a quick look at the website & Forum.

The s/w is no longer being updated and the source is being sold on.
I would very carefully check it works as you intend (Backup & Restore) before using.
If it all works as intended it could be useful but the long term support/bug fix side would concern me.

Hi

I'm sorry it's been a while since I looked at the website, but I can confirm this works with win7 and there is no restore function, as you just copy back what you want/need.

Clearly with win8/8.1 or 10 it may not function as intended unless it's tested

Many thanks

I did not doubt what you said or that it works under Win7, it was simply that from the last message I read in the Forum, the Developer said he was no longer updating the s/w and a buyer had been found for the source.

If it works as you need, after testing, then that is a risk you can make based on your own assessment.

If you don't test and understand what it can & cannot do you will find out too late, with NO support from the Developer.

e.g. I have used Teracopy for years and it has always worked perfectly, recently I have had 'bad copies' of some files but I am able to easily identify if that happens so I will still use it but with an eye towards it weaknesses.
It appears to be related to the volume of data processed which has only happened due to Disks getting bigger. (I now have 5TB disks ! )
There is a newer beta version but I would rather have faults that I 'Know' than ones that I don't in a Beta version.  ;D

It is a pity Cobian Backup is no longer being developed as it looks interesting in its ability to automate some tasks, from my brief look at the s/w.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
