Help with modem stats and speed drops
« on: July 21, 2015, 09:32:23 PM »

Hi all,

When my FTTC was activated at the end of June my sync speed was 39999/9997 so basically top end of the 40/20 package. It was fine for two weeks then I came home one day to find the sync had dropped to 24000~/4000~. I rebooted and resynced at 27000~/5500~ and thought best to leave it as I didn't want to upset DLM anymore than it had been. Anyway the line eventually sycned to 33997/9997 and stayed that way for another 2 weeks so I'm guessing I was banded at that point.

Fast forward to today and I'm back down to 23196/6567 so I thought best to get the stats off it to see if anything strange is going on! So here are the stats:

Quote
xdslcmd: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Retrain Reason: 1
Last initialization procedure status: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 6567 Kbps, Downstream rate = 23196 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 8076 Kbps, Downstream rate = 23637 Kbps

Discovery Phase (Initial) Band Plan
US: (6,31) (882,1193) (1984,2770)
DS: (33,857) (1218,1959) (2795,4083)
Medley Phase (Final) Band Plan
US: (6,31) (882,1193) (1984,2423)
DS: (41,857) (1218,1959)
VDSL Port Details Upstream Downstream
Attainable Net Data Rate: 6567 kbps 23196 kbps
Actual Aggregate Tx Power: 5.7 dBm 12.1 dBm
====================================================================================
VDSL Band Status U0 U1 U2 U3 U4 D1 D2 D3
Line Attenuation(dB): 8.5 41.3 59.4 N/A N/A 22.1 50.5 75.0
Signal Attenuation(dB): 8.5 41.2 57.9 N/A N/A 28.6 50.3 N/A
SNR Margin(dB): 4.0 3.9 4.5 N/A N/A 2.9 2.9 N/A
TX Power(dBm): -3.5 -1.6 4.0 N/A N/A 10.4 7.3 N/A

Error counts:

Downstream Upstream
CRC errors 58228 0
FEC errors 274 31
HEC errors 10902 0

So I decided to run a quiet line test without the modem connected to be sure and there was noise on the line, so I reconnected the modem and it synced back to (I assume the banded profile):

Quote
# xdslcmd info --pbParams
xdslcmd: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: Showtime
Retrain Reason: 0
Last initialization procedure status: 0
Max: Upstream rate = 11461 Kbps, Downstream rate = 42672 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 9995 Kbps, Downstream rate = 34999 Kbps

Discovery Phase (Initial) Band Plan
US: (6,31) (882,1193) (1984,2770)
DS: (33,857) (1218,1959) (2795,4083)
Medley Phase (Final) Band Plan
US: (6,31) (882,1193) (1984,2580)
DS: (41,857) (1218,1959) (2795,3250)
VDSL Port Details Upstream Downstream
Attainable Net Data Rate: 11461 kbps 42672 kbps
Actual Aggregate Tx Power: 6.0 dBm 12.5 dBm
====================================================================================
VDSL Band Status U0 U1 U2 U3 U4 D1 D2 D3
Line Attenuation(dB): 5.0 37.9 55.9 N/A N/A 19.1 47.1 71.5
Signal Attenuation(dB): 5.0 37.8 55.1 N/A N/A 25.6 46.8 73.2
SNR Margin(dB): 6.6 6.8 6.4 N/A N/A 6.2 6.3 6.2
TX Power(dBm): -5.1 -6.2 5.4 N/A N/A 10.2 7.3 2.6

The annoying thing is that the noise on the line is now gone and so I think I have intermittent problem which is stopping DLM from raising the speed. Do these stats show if anything funny is going on or should I be running a stats program to see if there is any pattern?

Thanks

Looking at it i think you must of had high errored seconds and this upset the DLM before you done anything and two weeks sounds about right for the banding process to relax your line.

It's obvious to me your line never got back to the way it was so there is some interference going on and the only way to see this actually happening is monitoring your line with a unlocked HG612 or by asking yourself did i introduce any new products into the premises that could interfere with my broadband.

I thought it could have possibly been the new Binatone cordless phones I have purchased, the base unit sits within the vicinity of the modem but that has been unplugged for two weeks to rule it out.

I have now loaded up the HG612 and I'm uploading to mydslwebstats under the username: rackers

Hopefully the graphs will give an indication of what is going on.

Hmm Binatone cordless phones that's what i am using and every time the phone rings 4 to 16 errored seconds on the upstream anyway that is still under investication by me.

That's the only way to find out what's going on with your line by using the stats programs and if the issue is big it will clearly stand out in your stats.

Hi all,

Thought I'd add an update, lost dial tone last night and BT attached it to the already open broadband fault. Dial tone returned last night (to my annoyance as it was an intermittent fault).

Openreach engineer attended today and luckily when running tests lost dial tone also and he found a fault at the cabinet. One of the pairs had become brittle and had come loose. Thumbs up for Openreach on this one!

Glad it's been sorted by BTOR, and if your going to use MDWS to see possible issues on your line you need to let it run for 24 hours and more.

Thanks. The stats program seems to keep stopping after a while, the computer isn't set to sleep and all the lights are staying green. Antivirus is fine and UAC is off. Any ideas why it would keep stopping?

Thanks

Could you try the attached programs in place of the versions you are currently using?

If that doesn't resolve the issue, I might ask for extracts from some of the logs in the Event & Error Logs folder.

A few questions.............

  * Which modem are you using?

  * How is it physically connected to the PC you use to monitor the stats?

  * Which version of Windows are you using?

  * Does the stopping of the program coincide with viewing any of the logs via Windows Notepad.exe?

  * Is there any timing pattern to the issue?

  * Which AV program do you use?

Thanks. I'll give this program a go and post back if it hasn't resolved the issue.

Hi,

Still seems to be stopping so here are some answers to your questions.

 * Which modem are you using?

HG612 3B

  * How is it physically connected to the PC you use to monitor the stats?

Via LAN cable to LAN2.

  * Which version of Windows are you using?

8

  * Does the stopping of the program coincide with viewing any of the logs via Windows Notepad.exe?

I haven't viewed any logs at all.

  * Is there any timing pattern to the issue?

Maybe 30 minutes?

  * Which AV program do you use?

Avira

Thanks

Windows 8 and some anti virus  programs have a habit of blocking some of the programs. What you need to do is run the following programs one at a time directly from the folder in the order shown, and if you get a Windows 8 warning click on more information then select the option to ok it to run and not to ask again. If you anti virus blocks it then report it as a false positive and add it to the exceptions list.

hg612 current stats
HG612 stats
HG612 run

Hopefully that will resolve the problem.

Hi.

Thanks. It seems to have resolved. I changed the order of network preference in network connections and that seem to solve it somehow! If the problem happens again I will try what you have suggested.

Thanks again

That all looks normal when extra logging is disabled, but I see from MDWS that you had been offline between 06:52 & 07:40 this morning.

Was that intentional or a recurrence of the problem?

I do notice from your log extracts though that it is only taking around 1.5 seconds for the whole process.
That seems a shade too fast, as though something could be being missed.

Do you have lots of entries, at times corresponding to the logging not working, in the EXIT_2_INSTANCES.LOG file?

If so, there may be a clue in the ONGOING_ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT file, but you would need to temporarily enable Extra debugging info logging via the GUI's Additional Settings tab for us to see it.

Not intentional, it is a recurrence.

I will enable the extra debugging so I can get a clearer picture for you. I will post back ASAP.

Thanks for the help
