Poll - Broadband, xDSL or DSL
« on: July 29, 2015, 01:47:45 AM »

I'd appreciate your thoughts and feedback on the terms "Broadband", "xDSL" & "DSL" please.

Most of us on here are aware that the correct term is xDSL, but when it comes to the General Public and search engines then 'Broadband' appears to be the most popular terms.
Unfortunately the vast majority of people don't have a clue what xDSL means and give a blank look if you say 'DSL'.  So what do you think would be best for the site for renaming of the historic ADSL section?

When it comes to the header pages Ive already started to rename and change ADSL to 'DSL Broadband' to cover both terms, but space in the top menu tab is limited.

I voted Broadband mainly because it is the most generic term and what Joe Public would understand. I know most regulars here would understand xDSL but I think the more generic term would suit occasional visitors better.

I vote broadband, even though it's technically ambiguous. What I would suggest, if you can't fit 'DSL Broadband' onto the tab, is to have a nice big banner at the top of the page containing something like
Quote
'The information contained within these pages refers ONLY to broadband supplied over a telephone line, it does not apply to Virgin Media cable internet.'

Being more technical than most members on here..(ok I exaggerated that bit a little  ;D )..Seriously though I voted for Broadband  as its a term that probably everyone who accesses the internet knows.  :)

As I intensely dislike usage of the phrase "Fibre Broadband" when no optical fibre enters the end user's premises . . .  :-X

My choice has to be "xDSL".  :)

I'm afraid it's got to be "Broadband " for the reasons already set out.

I got to the polling station to find it was closed in the early morning but left my ballet paper at the front door just encase, it's got to be Broadband for me as it covers the whole spectrum.

Me too - see Fibre Optic Broadband which isn't!.  The UK is the only country that does this.

I find it highly amusing that it was Virgin who started the trend, yet now everyone else is doing it.. they've dropped the term fibre like a hot potato.
Their latest ads now say things like.
