Using Windows 10 and an NVidia Card?? Oh dear...
« on: July 28, 2015, 08:59:05 PM »

Windows 10 in Nvidia driver train wreck just 48 hours from big launch
Unstoppable auto-updates? More like auto-borkage

From The Register

Windows 10's automatic updates feature has clashed with Nvidia's driver system, causing the new operating system to jump the tracks just days before it officially launches on Friday.

Early adopters are experiencing glitches (particularly in multi-monitor setups) and in some cases crashes tied to the automatic update of an Nvidia graphic cards driver on Windows 10.

All of my desktops have Nvidia cards so won't be upgrading anytime soon....  :'(

There's another interesting article on Win 10 from El Reg here.

No problems on my W10 test system, but it is a fairly old Nvidia GeForce card.
I am running Nvidia GeForce Experience and it did update something today.....

The misfiring Windows Update software push has sparked howls of protests from users through Nvidia forums and elsewhere.

The issue stems from a push-me-pull-you conflict between Windows Update and Nvidia’s own driver and software management tool, Nvidia GeForce Experience.

Oh gawd.   I'm not a fan of the windows updater version of GeForce.   Ive suffered big time before at the hands of Win7 auto updating GeForce and nvidia drivers.
Its the one reason why now I never ever do any windows NVidia updates.

Latest I have read is that MS are now going to allow 'Auto Updates' to be defered for anything other than security related updates etc.

Quote
Microsoft caused controversy when it suggested people using the Home version of its system would have to add new features as they became available.

Matters were not helped when it explicitly said businesses would be able to wait until "quality and application compatibility has been assessed in the consumer market".

That led some bloggers to accuse Microsoft of treating the public like "guinea pigs".

But on the eve of Windows 10's release, Microsoft told the BBC it had added an option to defer all Home Edition updates, security fixes aside.

There remains, however, an incentive to buy the Pro or Enterprise versions, as their owners will be able to control which specific features are added.

Today, two of my Windows-10 eligible machines have told me they can't yet update to Windows 10, reason given is that the Manufacturer (Nvidia!) "hasn't released a driver for Windows 10".

So at least it won't be breaking lots of computers today.  not with duff Nvidia drivers, anyway.

Just about to back up the hard disk, swap for a different spare graphics card, and see if the Windows 10 upgrade will run.

I seem to remember that once you have upgraded to Win 10, you cannot go back to the previous OS as Win 10 will invalidate the serial number for any previous OS. So a restore doesn't work.. I might be wrong but saw it somewhere.

Also check The Register for further disaster stories....

Thank you! Just as a precaution in case of any disasters, I've picked up a couple of Key by-e-mail-only win8.1 Pro licences off ebay for £29.95 each. Have used them before with no problems, just check the seller's feedback first though. ..

I tried the Win10 'upgrade' on a laptop I don't use a lot. It went ahead with the upgrade...

It's now sitting there blue screening and rebooting continuously  :comp:
