Wait 15 minutes when turning on modem again?
« on: July 19, 2015, 03:21:54 PM »

I think saw on here somewhere if you want to reboot your modem you should unplug it for at least 15 minutes then back on again, something to do with the DLM checking every 15 minutes, is this true, why should we do this? Or have I got this completely wrong  ???

Hi

It is 30 minutes that is usually recommended, but if you reboot or turn-off the router the other end should get to know that and not think it is a noise problem that it needs to slow your down your connection to try and resolve.

I think the worse thing you can do is just pull the plug out the socket, rebooting or turning off the power to the router/modem is not quite as drastic.

For a one off turn-off or reboot I've never waited and it's made no difference to my line.

Regards

Phil

The DLM operates in 15 minute "windows". However there is no way of knowing when one window ends and the next begins.

Hence the advice to wait 30 minutes between power down and power up. By following that simple rule, you are guaranteeing that the DLM will see one complete 15 minute window with a loss of power status and so should ignore that window, not penalising your circuit.

@Geekofbroadband - it might have been a question posted by me that you saw in a thread somewhere, not sure how to do a search for it.
