Router Firmware updates

Is there a correct way to upgrade router firmware to be 100% safe not to affect DLM?

I'm guessing that if you've had stable connection (15 days??) ok to do the upgrade as reboot?

safe way is power the modem off, unplug the dsl line, power the modem back on, perform any necessary set up adjustments, reboot if necessary, wait 30 minutes with the modem on, then reconnect the dsl line.
