the fttc/adsl bt checker url needs changing.
« on: March 19, 2017, 02:40:54 PM »

I was just looking at this page; http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/btwchecker.php and for me the part where its supposed to show the bt checker it says: Your connection is not secure

I think its because the address we usually use to check the page is https://www.dslchecker.bt.com which is the one that comes up on google if I type bt checker. But for some reason thats sending people to the unsecured page warning.

The address it needs to be updated to is: http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome

Thanks guys

It was indeed using https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/pls/adsl/adslchecker.welcome
This was the old url and the one which now throws the security error.

I've just amended it to http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

As I put in another thread, the issue here is that BT Wholesale failed to heed the warnings issued by the Chrome dev team and Mozilla, in which they stated they would be blacklisting SHA1 hashed SSL websites, such as the adsl checker. For those warnings to stop showing, all BTW have to do is switch to a valid SHA2 or better certificate, which is a rather simple job.

Both chrome and mozilla are starting to get very strict.
Changes are going to affect an awful lot of websites - particularly all forums will be affected.

Quote
Beginning in January 2017, Chrome (version 56 and later) will mark pages that collect passwords or credit card details as “Not Secure” unless the pages are served over HTTPS.

In effect it will be forcing site owners who run forums to purchase some sort of SSL certificate.
Then on top of that, there is the problem with inserting images into a https forum that will also throw warnings if the image is hosted on another website and show as broken.  From memory you then need to get some sort of proxy.
There's quite a lot of community based forums who are unhappy about these changes re cost and work involved.  Although Im not on shared hosting, I believe some who are, are also running into config problems.

TBH its not anything I know much about and why I pay for managed hosting leaving them to ensure security issues are kept up to date.  I'm kept busy enough without having to worry about the server side of things.

With not processing any payments its not anything Ive ever had to look into, but now its going to affect forums then I need to start researching my options.
I'm also concerned about my own personal security when it comes to SSL verification.   Already had one nutjob to deal with and I'm not putting myself or my family at risk.

I would like to point out that no 'purchase' as such is required now. Services such as Cloudflare, Let's Encrypt, and Comodo offer free SSL certificates. This is why Chrome and Firefox have become so strict, because it is VERY easy to get an SSL certificate nowadays.
