VDSL Counters with New Router
« on: July 06, 2015, 09:53:04 AM »

Folks,

Could you please help me with the stats from my Draytek 2860ac (Having had massive issues with faulty HH5's) - Are these ok, or are the error counts a little high?

These counts are for after the router has been online for 87 Hrs.

The upstream E/S & SES do look a bit high for 87 hours.

It all depends if those errors were in a burst period or if they just slowly clock up throughout the day.    Also bear in mind that for the past few days that much of the UK has been subject to thunderstorms which will increase the error count.

DLM is designed to ignore any errors it detects as being part of a wide area event such as a thunderstorm..  but aside from that it looks at errors over the course of the day.

Using your current figures (and if DLM doesnt deduce they are from a thunderstorm) then it takes you to MTBE red which means the DLM may take action.

If its not storm related then upstream errors is most usually internal wiring/filters.

Thank You.

I'll report back tomorrow which should tell me if it settles over the next 24 hours (hopefully no more thunderstorms).

My router is plugged directly into the filter, which is the 1st socket at the back of our External NTE. I've also wall mounted the router, and moved the RJ away (as far as I can from anything that may be causing crosstalk).

Fingers crossed - and thanks for your guidance.

Just one quick question: Are you connected via an ECI cabinet?

Yes

Thank you. The reason for my query is centred around the reported vendor IDs for the ATU-R and the ATU-C. As they are both Lantiq chipsets, you may find that having both "ends" identical might be a bonus.  :)

yeah - I did my research on that bit, and bought the Draytek specifically.

I was hoping for a better sync speed - and hopefully that will happen eventually - but the whole thing does seem better (and the WiFi is amazing) , in comparison to the HH5.

I had a BT HH5a, which to be honest was ok until BT broke it with a firmware update (nightly reboots), I then after lots of hassle and replacements got a HH 5B out of them , and it's maybe ok with an Huawei cabinet - but all round for me it was useless , wifi , sync etc

So, just under 12 hours since my original post.

+54 on the Upstream ES
No Change on Upstream SES

+55 Downstream ES
No Change on Downstream SES

How do with think that will play out?

Those are quite acceptable figures.  If they continue like that, then it is likely the previous bout was from thunderstorms.

The DLM would be happy with an average of 110 E/Sec per day and glass you as green :)

Thanks Kitz - will have a look tonight and see what the counts are.

Do you think I will eventually get a resync at a higher speed?

When I first had infinity installed, I was had a sync speed of late 70's - but I guess the cabinet had just got more busy?

From your stats, then it would appear the line is already at its maximum capability.    The reduction in speed over time will be due to crosstalk as more users get put on the cab.   Ive lost about 30Mb so far from my max attainable purely due to crosstalk over the past 2 years.

There is only one area I can suggest trying

Quote
As they are both Lantiq chipsets, you may find that having both "ends" identical might be a bonus.

Although Im on an ECI cab, without doubt the BCMs always seem to perform better on my line:-

BCM 6368 (such as in the HG612) gives me circa 3.5Mbps more than a Lantiq VRX-268 (such as ECI/TD-W9980/HH5A)

BCM 63168 (such as Zyxel VMG8320 & Billion 8800NL) seems to eke out a bit more over the BCM6368 for most lines...  it gave me an extra 3.5Mbps.. so thats 7Mbps more than a Lantiq.    None of the other routers currently allow me to sync at 80Mbps, but the Zyxel does and give me a little bit more to play with.

I cant stress enough that all lines are different so you may have to suck it and see..   but I am of the opinion that for lines which arent very long then generally the BCM chipsets do tend to give better results regardless of the chip in the DSLAM.    The Lantiq's come into their own on longer lines and are very good for stability...  but if your line is decent/short then you may get more by using a BCM.

Thanks Kitz - having just spent £250 on this router, then willing to wait and see - I guess the crosstalk issue will be resolved eventually with vectoring - but at least I've got a reliable router now, with good wifi and management.

I'll keep an eye on my stats and post if they change - thanks all for your help
