Hi everyone

Thanks for taking time to read this. I'm after some advice or thoughts.

I'm on a new housing development. The Fibre Cabinet was installed mid may and I got connected on May 20th. My download speeds upon connection was 65mbps down and 18mbps up. Later that day the downloads increased to 71mbps. The training period passed and remained stable at 70mbps. I went on holiday and came back and on 5th June my speeds dropped to 29mbps. I restarted the ECI OR modem and it sync'd back up but I was only get 41mbps.

My ISP couldn't find any issues. wholesale were saying everything is fine and in line with the estimate speeds. Suddenly about 2 weeks later and the night before and OR engineer was due to attend my speeds increased to 50-52mbps. No one can tell me what happened. All I know is something happened between 10pm and midnight.

I've had 4 OR engineers come out. The last two have been absolutely useless and won't do any investigations other than plug their meter in. The first two engineers were great. There was a HR error in the cabinet and they moved me to another port. That didn't solve it. Second visit found a HR error but it was decided it was the fibre cab itself showing as a HR error on the test. There was a LH coil error but again not deemed important.

My cabinet is 991m from my house it says on the OR engineers diagnostics.
It says my line is capable of 168mbps
Throughput is between 41-50mbps

The engineer tested the output from the cabinet and that is 79.999 but at the faceplate where the cable enters my house the reading there drop between 30-40mbps.

The second engineer rang his help desk and spoke to other engineers and they decided the cabinet distance is fine especially as it's all new cabling etc. They could not explain the drop in speed from the cab to my house so it was recommended they replace the cable on the D-side from the cab to my house. This hasn't happened all they have done is send engineers out to run tests!

The engineer I had today even said and I quote, the engineers that you have had previous and the people they have spoken to are either idiots or not experienced. He went on to say just forget you ever had 70mbps. It's better than what you had. I couldn't believe my ears. So I sent him packing and my ISP have escalated it yet again.

In the meantime I've unlocked a HG512 OR modem and pulled some stats from it. I have no idea what it means but could you guys have a look below and see if it offers any clues as to what is going on if you would be so kind.

Many thanks in advance. Here's the results:

I'd suggest you install DSLStats (see http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,15484.0.html) for link to download. Run this for a while to generate some running stats. The other thing you could do is register for MyDSLStats (see http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,14361.0.html for details) and that way we can all see what DSLStats uploads to that website which may help diagnose the problem and save you adding graphs etc to this thread.

Are you sure it's 991 meters?  If it is you're lucky getting what you do. How did you know the original speeds if you've only just unlocked the modem?

To capable of 168 you'd have be on top of the cabinet, in fact I don't think I've ever seen a line with an attainable speed that high, even in a test environment.

Hi

Thanks for your replies. I've doing regular speed tests. Initially with speedtest.net but since the drop in speed I've also been using BT Wholesale Speed Test site so it logs the results with BT WS.

I've been getting my information from the engineer. The first two were showing me what is on their test equipment. The cable run from my house to the cabinet is 991 meters. This is what the engineers screen was showing and it's about right.

All I know is when I was connected I was achieving 70mbps on May 20th. From June 5th I was achieving 40'ish mbps. Then all by itself I gained another 10mbps and this has remained every since. I'm hitting between 47 and 51mbps.

When I got home yesterday after the engineer had been my downstream was 10mbps! After a couple of hours and a couple of reboots of the modem my speed returned to 47mbps.

When I connect the HG612 modem and use that my downstream is a bit slower but from what I've read this is normal. I will set it up to run over the weekend and run dslstat on it. This is all very new to me so your have to forgive my vagueness.

Interestingly I went talking to the neighbours and a few of them have been told they can't get Fibre yet as there is a problem with the cabinet. First I've heard of it. So I'm wondering if there is indeed something wrong and BT OR are keeping quiet about it.

My argument is, IF my line was never capable of me receiving 70mbps. How on earth was I getting this for a couple weeks no problem.

It's all a mystery.

Looks like your HG612 is not on the latest firmware. I recommend you upgrade to the latest B030SP08 as described here http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm#hg612_hacking

I recommend bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui

It may of been capable if the conditions were perfect, no cross talk, no interference, very good cable quality, power masking etc. Generally lines of that length are lucky to get around 35Mbps.

What may have happened is that G.INP mk2 has been added to your connection. As your current firmware doesn't support G.INP your connection suffers.

Another disadvantage of the earlier firmware is that it doesn't report attenuation, which would help to diagnose your problem.

Hi ya

Thanks for your replies, very much appreciated.

The modem I was given on install was the latest ECI one. I purchased the HG612 as it was easier to unlock. I will update the firmware with the link you provided, many thanks for that.

The engineers, all but one, said the cabinet isn't G.INP. The one engineer didn't know what it was! There is no vectoring as this is very expensive and wouldn't be put in the cabinet with only 39 connections on it.

The problem is on paper work, it says I shouldn't of got 70mbps but on the ground I was, something happened and now I'm not. Also there is no explanation as to why I suddenly gained 10mbps between 10pm and midnight one week when nothing had changed.

There is no change infrastructure wise around my are or where the cabinet is since the day of connection to now.

Also I don't understand how after the engineer left at 1pm and I got home at 2:30pm the download speeds were 10mbps. By 4:30/5pm and after 2 restarts of the modem it was back to 47mbps. The one thing I noticed was it had chucked it down with rain so not sure if that was related or not.

Do you know if your cabinet is a Huawei or ECI?

This link describes how to find out http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/cabinet-lookup.htm#fttc_dslam

I'll hazard a guess that you're on a Huawei cabinet, and that this won't have G.INP yet given the dates you have.

I'll also hazard a guess that you were one of the first to be connected to the cabinet, which is why you had fantastic speeds to start with - since more people got connected, your initial speed will never be attainable again, unless you convince everyone else to switch off their modems! (Crosstalk).

If your 991 metres from the cabinet, your speeds are pretty good.

I guess the intermittent speed drops etc are the real issue - you'd need to give more detail or use MDWS. The fact you've had two HR faults indicates there's something going on...

Hi ya

Thanks for your posts. I've just spoken to another neighbour who tried to upgrade to Fibre this week and was told the cabinet isn't ready yet as there is a problem with it. My ISP and BT Openreach are turning their back on this now. Although my ISP kindly tried to flog me a ethernet connection at the cost of £500 a month and will guarantee me 100 down and 100 up! Nice of them hey. Now they are saying they will release me from the contract so I can go to BT so I am fully within the BT group so that more pressure can be put on them. Doesn't matter who I go to if the infrastructure is the problem. I'm going to have a walk later and take a pic of the cabinet.

In the meantime I've upgraded the HG612 to the firmware mention above. Is this now the latest version which is showing in the GUI: I used used the one ending webgui...

Sorry, that's the wrong version. You need B030SP08 as I said before.

Hi

Second attempt and it's gone on this time, thought it hadn't the first time round. Only difference I did this time was doing it via the reset button method as opposed to doing it through the GUI.

It now reads:Product type   EchoLife HG612
Device ID   5C7D5E-21530315408K32020137
Hardware version   VER.B

Batch number   BC1P6.030.A2pv6C038m.d24j

I've off for a walk around to stalk the fibre cabinet

Yeah, the GUI method doesn't work - the only way is reset.
