VLAN priority 802.1P values
« on: June 25, 2015, 03:33:04 PM »

I am sure it is something that I have simply missed along the way but I find myself wondering over the 802.1P values.    I find -1,0, 1 and 2 used in screen shots of working FTTC connection settings.   I think 2 is the HG612 default value and for that reason I have used it.   I think -1 and 0 are simply not set values but 1 versus 2 puzzles me.  I am using TalkTalk Business and using 2 at this time.  However I notice a Kitz guide giving 1 for TalkTalk.

Does the value matter and if it does what might having a wrong value cause??

An interesting question to which I do not know the answer.  :)

Have you checked the Wikipedia page? That might provide some clarity . . .

Yes, the Wikipedia page give summary of what it should do when configured with end to end control.  However I wonder if just changing it in the modem does or does not have impact? and whether for better or worse?

I agree with you comment that the -1 and 0 values are probably null values.

As for using 1 or 2, perhaps a direct experiment will clarify things?  :-\

QoS only works if you have control of all devices your traffic crosses. As the internet is "best effort"  devlivery I doubt it makes any difference what values you enter.

I would be interested in the views of others though.

BT's FTTC Handbook (old, escaped versions, anyway) mentions QoS, and indicates that it can use the .1P values to schedule packets upstream. WBC handbook mention that CP's can purchase the capability for QoS to be used too.

I suspect it makes a difference within your own assured data rates, which might make a difference if the backhaul starts to get overloaded.
