Yup, Thomson box ticked, typo in model number (it is TG589vn v3) apologies.  IP is correct, can telnet from the same machine using the the command specified in your last response.

Is there any way I can see how far it gets? i.e logging in, or quite what it is seeing as being returned?  Event Log just shows 'Timeout while retrieving stats', then 'No stats received'

There are only two places where those event log entries can occur. One is in collecting the basic stats, and you've checked that command. The other (in the case of Thomson modems only) is in collecting the G.INP data. The command for this is xdsl info ginp=yes. Could you try this command by telnet please?

If this command also works, and there isn't a noticeable delay in responding to it, or to the other command you tried, then I'll really have to put my thinking cap on.

The type of router isn't important, so long as it does its job. What matters is the modem.

It doesn't matter what sort of router it is. You don't run a monitoring program on the router, you run it on a connected PC. Like this for example.

No, it requires a GUI, which openWRT et al doesn't have. Your best bet is to get a raspberry pi and use that for DSLStats.

Yes, or you can upload the data to MyDSLWebStats.

Eric, why is there no desktop icon for DSLstats when it is running on a Windows XP computer?

I don't have an XP installation to check, but as far as I know there should be an icon in the system tray and on the task bar when it's running.
