Running Cat 5e cable...
« on: June 18, 2015, 05:45:53 PM »

We're going to run Cat 5e cable to a room in our house.

Would this cable be suitable? http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/cat-5e-utp-network-cable-solid-1m-priced-per-metre-cw45y

Yes, but it's a lot cheaper to buy it on a reel, e.g. http://www.screwfix.com/p/philex-data-cable-cat-5e-utp-50m-beige/10218

Just wondering why you're asking really as Cat5e cable is pretty standard......
Any particular concerns or requirements that prompted the question?

I have a whole roll which I'm not using, you are welcome to have it if you're local-ish (Chelmsford area)

I take it you mean £99.00 and not 99 pence ?

He does mean 99p, but that's because it's an auction and there's only one bid so far:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201374667658?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D201374667658%26_rdc%3D1

Sorry, somehow I lost a sentence & didn't notice it was missing. :-[

A couple of points which are worth mentioning.

Cat6 cable is thicker in diameter than Cat5e and is not as flexible mainly due to the "plastic tube" running down the center of the cable. This can also make it more difficult to terminate.

A lot of the "cheap" Cat5e/6 cable is of the CCA (copper clad aluminum) contruction and unless things have changed this cable does not comply with nor permitted under the ethernet standards.

Some reasons why CCA is not a good choice are
  • due to its higher attenuation there is an increase in packet loss especially over longer cable runs and/or higher speeds
  • With PoE becomming more popular and squeezing more and more current flow over ethernet cabling the higher resistance of this type of cable means there is a real possiblilty heat can build up quicker than it can disipate

I live miles away I'm afraid. Would postage be a possibility? :)

You can cheap delivery here: https://www.parcel2go.com/

I send a lot of parcels, & find Hermes, give me the best deal.

You only need to double wrap it in a decent black bag, so cutting down the overall weight of package & cost.

Also worth mentioning that the minimum permitted bend radius for cat6 is much larger than that of cat5.

Oh no, not Hermes! They're very poor around here, several times items have got lost.

If you can send by UPS I'll happily pay all the fees? :)

Plenty of other couriers on that link I posted, & cheaper than Parcel Force.
Personally I have never had any issues with Hermes.

Dependent upon the weight of the item being sent, I routinely use Collect+ Courier Services.

Many items of equipment have been shipped from The Cattery to Walter's Wheelbarrow Store by the above service.
