in place upgrades are bad, the reccomended practice has always been a clean install, which is odd as microsoft go against their own reccomendations encouraing in place upgrades.

I hold some hope tho given it says to download a file first, so I hope there is a chance to download an iso not just an exe installer.

I have registered both my laptop and main pc for this upgrade and they both share the same key, so it seems it will honour 10 activations technet licenses.

I normally wait a year before upgrading any Windows version to avoid (hopefully most of) the inevitable bugs.. So -  does anyone know how long a grace period there is between the d/l and needing to actually upgrade for free? It'll be a dual boot setup here anyway on all machines.

As I posted earlier, 1 year

I have a laptop i bought from PC specialist and as you probably know laptop drivers are a ******** pain. How would it work if i upgraded from Windows 7? I will probably have no windows 10 drivers from pc specialist unless windows 10 is magic and does eveything for me :)

I believe the Windows 10 upgrade tool which comes through with Windows Update checks all drivers etc are available before offering the upgrade, thats what it did on my Windows 7 desktop. It hasn't appeared yet on my Dell laptop running Win7 though.

Hi All,

A couple of comments;

In the days whereby cloud type apps become the norm then Im not sure I like that.

Be afraid, be very afraid! marketing peepz would have you believe it is actually cheaper to pay as you go and in some case (businesses with multiple copies of same software for instance) it can be argued this will be true.  Most though will find they pay more. The Cloud is more about control, power and money and the benefits are definitely stacked against the consumer, especially if net neutrality gets blown out of the water.

And if anybody uses Media Centre (as we do) will that be gone after the upgrade?
According to a misinformed Microsoft "The main scenario people used WMC for was to play DVD.  :-X I still use it on my HTPC and rarley for playing DVD's.

From what I read Windows Media Center is effectively dead, as Microsoft has no plans to support the software with Windows 10. Worse still peepz who opt for a free OS upgrade from Windows 7 or 8.1 will lose Media Center functionality altogether. And no, there won't be a way to get the software back.

See Twitter feed https://twitter.com/GabeAul/status/595325485309005824

If you haven't tried it take a look at Media browser 3. DOH! emby as its called now.

From experience old hardware which the manufacture wants to support in newer OS's should have drivers built into the newer OS's.

Kitezens reading this article may want to read the following article The Free Upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 OEM, Windows 7 Retail, Windows 8.1 OEM and Windows 8.1 Retail Users At the bottom it didn't read well for Dell users.

If it hasn't been said already MAKE sure you have your COA key, use an app to recover it if it is faded and installation media in case the upgrade goes tits up

Berrick, I'm in the process of changing to Mediaportal, have been for a long time but never find the time to complete things. I have 4 tuners in my server acting as a tv server. I also have Emby installed from when I was experimenting,  but for the moment will keep MP for TV duties. I've been using MCE since late 2006 for all TV watching and recording, but realised that MS were dropping it a long time ago, which is a shame as it could of been really good if they'd put some more effort in.

I'm aiming to buy a new computer too when Win 10 comes out to replace this old main computer running Win XP.. It really struggles to run some apps these days as most are bloated with memory requirements and I'm still limited, being 32bit.

I'll see if I like Win 10 when it does the upgrade to decide if I want Win 10 on my new computer.

If its anything like the Technical Preview by the time its retail released i'd be ok running it.  Its built on Win7 so its pretty stable, but with some more 8/8.1 interface tweaks with a visual rework back to desktop styling rather than touchscreens.  The Start button is indeed back which incorporates metro apps in a modulised form.

On my older PC, the tech preview had drivers for a legacy soundcard i could never make work in win7... so it has a pretty good on device support too.

It does, however, incorporate more cloud-based services and the ability to access a single profile over remote machines - hence the email registration/sign-in.

Although I cant help but think the 1yr free upgrade is almost a 'sorry we screwed up' apology.

Im going to stick to Win7 for the moment on my main box, I really don't have a reason to upgrade as I have no use for the new features as yet, in time i can see Win7 support being pulled then it'll be an almost forced upgrade :/

I will not be upgrading. I can't stand the metro interface elements and the whole email login and forced integration of all the online stuff scares me because I'm extremely privacy conscious.

Email login etc. is not forced at all, though it's the default route and needs a little thought/persistence to avoid.

I also don't trust Microsoft not to start charging a subscription fee for it, their vision of 'windows as a service' lends itself well to that and they've already done it with office.

Regarding dvd is 2 things.

VLC player supports dvd playback and is free.
Microsoft have said they will add DVD playback to windows 10 in some way, but not said how yet.

here is a minilist of downsides, , the only one there thats bad for me is the updates and since I will have win10 pro that one is bypassed.

There will probably be a fuller more technical list somewhere tho.

I didn't read the original article but it was reported on another site that windows x will even be available to people running 'Pirate Copies' of previous versions of windows.

So if true which I have no reason to doubt, is that then because Microsoft can't detect working pirate copies or as already mentioned 'have a hidden agenda' ?

Some comments from a few other posts are:-

****************************
I reserved a copy, but after reading just now, that there will be no way to disable automatic updates, have cancelled the reservation and will stick with windows 7

But a work-around would be:-
Bearing in mind that update is a service and can therefore be disabled, the following will disable updates. (Run a session)

stop-service wuauserv
set-service wuauserv –startup disabled

No service means no auto update.

or create a reg file using notepad and save as - something.reg

The contents of the reg file

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdat e\UX]
"IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdat e\UX\Settings]
"UxOption"=dword:00000000

That will bring the update applet back to control panel.

Until the official consumer release anything you read could be inaccurate.

*************

If you want to remove the update to 10 messages then un-install the update number KB3035583

Why I mention the Store is because that is a big money maker and must be one of the reasons MS are going to give it away. You can't sell apps to Windows 7 users, they need to upgrade,
