UK User - Asus DSL-N66U Vs BT Openreach Modem
« on: May 31, 2015, 03:43:05 PM »

hi guys, new here, I have an Asus DSL-N66U, got it second hand to replace the BT Openreach Modem and Thompson Router.  What I've found is that since installation my wired connection to the main PC seems around 10-12mb slower than when I was using the previous setup.  I've done numerous test's still not getting any faster speeds.  I've got the newest firmware installed, it's not made any difference?

Is this just the hardware, or could it be something else?

Hi and welcome to the forums.

The mention of the loss of 10-12Mbps of sync speed points that it could be related to BT's recent roll-out of G.INP.  You may find that your latency (ping times) have also increased.

Unfortunately the DSL-N66U has never been quite as stable as the BCM based routers.  I believe there were some fixes in the latest firmware, but Im not aware of it being G.INP compatible.

I may be jumping to conclusions because I dont know if you meet the other criteria.   But if all three of the following apply then it is most likely G.INP related.

1) You suddenly lose apprx 10Mbps of sync speed
2) Your latency (ping times) increase or double
3) You are on a Huawei cab.

Theres a lot of info scattered around about G.INP, but the summary pages here provide the latest info that we have. - G.INP - BT rollout 2015

thanks Kitz,

I've not noticed any major ping increases or decreases.

The loss of speed was only noticed after the installation of the DSL-N66U, I thought it would be down to the built in modem.  I might turn it off and try the BT/Thompson setup again to see if it goes back to the way it was.

I'll try and work out what the cabinet I'm connected to is if its the same with the thompson/bt setup.

If you have a Huawei modem and it is a g.inp issue then switching back to it should immediately clear the issue.

What's your latency like?   Try doing a tracert to the bbc.

that was over the wireless connection, not sure if that would make a difference?

Yes it will make a bit of difference, but judging your ping time to the router of 3-4ms, then thats about 23ms to the bbc.
Its not exceptionally high, but indicating that the line is interleaved.  If your latency is normally circa 12ms to the bbc then its a possibility because latency usually doubles.   Not conclusive, but the fact that you are on a Huawei cab, its a possibility.

BT are in the process of rolling out some 'fixes' which may help with latency, but the jury is still out whether or not it helps with speed loss.  We're waiting to see some results when the fixes have been applied for routers which have full access to stats to try figure out what is going on.
