Strange goings on with Firefox v38.0.1
« on: May 22, 2015, 08:15:02 PM »

Since updating to 38.0.1 on Firefox running under Linux I have seen some strange happenings on the forums ( this an others ). I normally use the 'Show unread posts since last visit' and always before on previous versions I could select an unread post to view with he 'new' button and when read click back and return to the list of unread posts. Now I dont see any unread posts and have to reload the page to see the as yet unread posts. Initially it seemed this was only on Linux but now I see the same behaviour on W7 running the same version of Firefox. Does this seem familiar to anyone here?

Don't know about any 'new' button, but if I click on 'last post' or the last page number it works just fine on W7 Firefox 38.0.1

I think it must be an add-on I have which is causing this so I'll have to do some work to sort out which one it is.

This morning I installed a fresh copy of Frefox x86-64 for Linux and started with a fresh profile. I have installed a few add-ons which I cannot live without, restored the userchrome users & passwords, and so far it is back to normal. I will over the next few days see if I can find which of the other add-ons causes the problem I was seeing, but so far so good.

It looks as though you're on the right track.

Was about to say it's ok here on Win7 but note you fixed it.

I have noticed an annoyance since updating to 38.0.1 and thats

(1) The warning about closing multiple windows no longer works
(2) You cant close the FF window by clicking the X on the last tab anymore and you can only do so by clicking the main window X....  which in turn means because of (1) means you can accidentally close down the whole lot.

That's odd, because both those things work properly on the Linux version here.

Hmmm thank you.  I also have a few add owns, I wonder in view of broadstairs also seeing some oddness after the upgrade it is to do with the addons.

I can't recall off hand which ones I use aside from tabmix plus and a code developer aid.  (Using the ipad atm but will test tomorrow properly when on the PC)

I've not yet discovered which of my add-ons was causing the problem but I have quite a lot back now without the issue coming back. I was getting some strange effects elsewhere which seemed like could have been a cache issue which has also not returned.

Kitz I just tried your issues on my W7 system with FF 38 and it does seem like it is a problem here as well - that was also with FF in safe more with add-ons disabled. I found I could close the program with 2 tabs open and no warning by using the X at top right even though the settings were correct to warn me. I could still close the program by clicking on the only open tab X so that part works.

Just found this in Mozilla Forums.

Ive spent the past hour or so trying to track this down myself.  By uninstalling & re-installing all my addons I'd narrowed it down to Tab Mix Plus.  I can repeatedly replicate this unwanted behaviour to the Tab Mix Plus addon.

I've reported it to TabMixPlus

I'd just come back here to report my findings and note that you've also managed to track it down and that there are also others reporting the same bug.

@broadstairs.   Thank you - Ive added the link you found in the TMP forum thread.

For now I've disabled TMP because as mentioned above its unwanted behaviour was becoming an annoyance with the way I work on the PC. :(

Had a reply to that thread.   I only have the one profile and since I already spent well over an hour this morning installing and reinstalling to try and track down the issue.

If there's 2 people on here with the issue, 2 (3 if you include me) on his own forums and several more on Mozilla seeing the same issue, then Im not faffing around any more.   Ive used Tab Mix Plus for at least 6 yrs maybe longer? and I know it was early on recommended on here.   From the link I realised its also causing an issue with Bookmarks and sure enough Im seeing that too (I'd wondered the other day why I couldn't bookmark something and ended up dragging pages to my desktop).

Whilst I appreciate that it may be hard to debug something if you're not seeing it yourself, but just passing it off with 'works for me' doesn't help those with problems. :(

So Ive now completely uninstalled TabMixPlus.  Im stressed enough atm and Im not spending the remaining few hours of my first day off in months farting around.  Life's too short - literally!

Yes I've removed TMP as well. I seem to be able to get FF setup OK so far without it.

Stuart

Since removing it, I havent noticed any difference other than tabs now work how they should. FF exits how it should and I can bookmark again.   I dont know if it broke anything else.   Its a shame in a way, because thinking back its probably more like 10yrs that Ive been using this extension.   Out of habit I just go get it again when I do a new installation of anything.

It appears that since Firefox 2.0,  FF natively contains most of the functions I originally started using TMP for and having searched earlier, then it would appear that TMP quite often breaks FF on updates.   I dont think I'd seriously noticed this before until the past week when things had become annoying and I'd no idea why.

I'd like to thank the devs of TMP for all their years of hard-work and dedication in coding what was at one time a very useful add-on.   Nothing can take away the fact that pre Firefox 2 it was one of the best add-ons.
However things have moved on and saying to people who have tried to troubleshoot and report the issue "Well it works for me" just prompted me to uninstall permanently. :(
