New Fibre network in Bath
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:06:10 PM »

Some intresting news in my local paper the 'Bath Chronicle', True speed is starting to build a optic fibre network in Bath & surrounding North East Somerset area.
I have seen Hibernia Networks busy laying the new optic fibre cable over the last few months from Chippenham to Bath. :)
And True Speed, has gone into partnership with Hibernia Networks to offer FTTP. :o & the cable will run right past my door. :o

The morph from Wansdyke to Truespeed seems interesting.

Its hard to tell the motivation from the other side of the country, but it appears like the B4RN-like community structure wasn't working well enough to get the project done.

Perhaps having someone like Professor Forde running the project, with something of a history with the UK universities network JANET, is a really critical factor in persuading locals to invest while feeling secure about both their money and their network.

Ive no doubt that it is a major factor and said similar myself several times.   B4RN is in a unique position having Barry Forde to do what he does for free.   Not only that - geographically too.  The area is classed as rural - yet is so close to Lancaster University and an area where a lot of academics and such are likely to live. The whole management team have a good mix of people all with some history or other in networking, broadband & technology.  Add in the fact that they have access to farming equipment/diggers etc and land access all for free then it certainly does inspire confidence. :)
