Video Needs Shortening.
« on: February 22, 2008, 10:00:10 PM »

For my next project I am again looking for some software to either cut out the start or and end bits of a video.

I have a series of TV episodes' and I want to join various episodes together making them run into one another without the credits on every episode.

I know I can and have used "Nero" and "Easy Video Joiner" in the past to do similar type projects, but wonder if any one knows of a easier program to use.

I don't know about "easier" but I use VirtualDubMod for this sort of task :

Edit - download the "All inclusive" version (2005-08-29)

Thanks, I'll take a look at that later.

I did manage to find a program called "Avi-Mpeg-Rm-Wmv Splitter v4.28" by boilsoft.com which can do the job, but still looking for something easier.

Basically, I need to be able to play the video and drop markers where ever I either want to start or stop a split.
With the above program, it is easy to find and mark a starting point, but trying to set the end is not so easy, as it is the end of the file so just wants to go back to the beginning which then loses the original start point.
Although I need to explore the "cut by time" option a little more.

Also preferably something with slow motion playback would be very handy as most of the cuts are in areas which are only a matter of one second apart.

Nope, still no good, no serrations to use as marker points.

edit

After trying a several programs, Allok Video Joiner/Splitter, Boilsoft Video Splitter and and another, they either took far to long because of wanting to re-compress the audio etc and TemPEG and VirtualDubMod not wanting to work on my system I reverted back to Nero, at least it gave me the options I wanted to create a seamless multi episode DVD all in one operation and did not take much time at all, just that it does not save the shortened files (which does not matter anyway).

I just thought there may have been a "more refined" dedicated trimming tool program out there than what I have come across so far.

Just to lop of the titles/credits and join the bits together, then Windows Movie Maker will do the job. :).

Never thought of that one even though I have used it "basically" in the past.

Thanks.

It works for me every time... just one thing to remember, when you get to the save movie wizard, on the movie settings bit, click 'show more choices' and in the drop-down list the only options worth bothering with are either 'high quality video (small)' - gives 320x240 res if opting for 4:3 ratio, or 'high quality video (large)' - 640x480*.  To change the aspect ratio, first go to tools/options/advanced.

If you have any more queries about the quirks & intricacies of WMM, then feel free to ask me. :)

* in 16:9 gives a movie res of 856x480

1. Just tried it, it saved the original file after chopping the last 90 seconds off as 36GB file. The original file is a 40 minute 350MB.
2. Maybe thats the reason for number 2.
3. Thanks, but on this occasion I am going to take a pass. (but I really do appreciate your input)

I tried the "Boilsoft" program again, but properly this time, and after re-compressing the audio the cut file was perfect.
Okay it took about 30 minutes but the result was worth it.

OF, I have a copy of this which you would be welcome to if you'd like to try it:

http://www.focusmm.co.uk/shop/Select-Video-Studio-pr-522.html

I did install it but never got round to registering it, as I decided I preferred the fisher-price simplicity of WMM.

No worries... it is going begging though if anyone wants it - free, gratis and for nothing. :)
