How did BT end up with Huawei and ECI?
« on: April 02, 2015, 02:09:07 PM »

I've read lots of threads on forums about the differences between these two manufacturers. BT seem to prefer the Huawei technology and struggle to drag both ECI cabinets and modems along with the new techology to be rolled out in the coming years.

I'm just wondering why this whole process as been complicated by having 2 different manufacturers? If they just worked with one company then the whole process would be more streamlined. The only advantage of using a different product would be if BT created their own technology and it ended up being Huawei and their own brand.

Where did ECI come from? What does ECI bring to the table? What advantage did/does have ECI over Huawei?

For the record I'm on an ECI cabinet and I'm using an Huawei OR modem. I've nothing against ECI personally. I'm just wondering how BT got in to this position.

I agree, I expect tho its cost management.

By having a 2nd supplier they can negotiate huawei downwards saying if you dont comply we order less units, and use ECI instead I also expeci ECI units are cheaper, given their lower maturity in the market.

Given what we seen so far and how good broadcom is I think there is clear superiority with the huawei.

Now I may be wrong and I hope I am but this doesnt bode well for us on ECI when g.inp and later vectoring gets enabled.

Chrysalis has already mentioned it ......... in business (especially one as large as BT), you don't put all your eggs in one basket. That way there isn't a monopoly and as we all know, competition is good for the customer re: pricing structures.

Oh yes, my Sky TV has just gone up £5 due to competition with BT over the football rights.

Your mistaking inflation for a competitive market place.

The only inflation I can see here is in footballer's wages.

Back when exchanges were being upgraded to digital ones (but still narrowband voice), BT did the same thing by taking AXE-10 from Ericsson as a competitor to the System X from the British consortium of STC, Plessey and GEC. It ran as the smaller option, much like ECI, though ironically had a much bigger, more successful market outside the UK.

They've tended to do the same thing with 21CN deployment too, in both core network and in the access network.
