Broadband REIN and SHINE on Radio4
« on: March 16, 2015, 01:16:59 PM »

Just heard an article on radio 4 "you and yours" http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b055fzm0#auto (starts about 32:50 Mins in) about REIN and SHINE.

Thanks for that. It was reasonably informative (for the BBC) but of course glossed over a lot of relevant stuff.

The link takes you to the relevant page for BBC iPlayer. You should see a basket of chips and a button to press to play the programme.

was there any mention of the interference caused by radio4 itself?   :P

Unfortunately BBC Radio 4 broadcast on 198 kHz is a licensed transmission.

All forms of xDSL, when using radio transceivers at either end of a metallic pathway, are not licensed to emit a signal into free-space. Thus the signal has to be constrained within that metallic pathway . . . If the signal does escape into free-space it is treated as a unlicensed broadcast transmission.

Indeed, but the point I'm getting at is the opposite scenario: licensed 'free air' transmissions bleeding into metallic pathway transmissions and causing interference to the signal on the metallic pathway. It might not be immediately possible to do anything about this, but official acknowledgement of it happening may eventually lead to a solution (like BT using shielded cables for dropwires, for example)

I think you are trying to open a BIG can of worms !
Because of a matter of 400,000 years development, human speech/ears have a high tolerance to errors. This isn't true of analogue data systems, so using a 'phone system for data is iffy; Low power = interference; High power = crosstalk. Having a large investment BT  doesn't like to acknowledge this while the majority of customers don't grumble.

Thank you for the linky.  Although I dont think any of the regs here will have learnt anything new, its good that they have at least broached a subject that is seldom talked about.  I suppose they also have to dumb things down a bit for the general population.
