ADSL Router with VLAN
« on: March 15, 2015, 02:25:22 PM »

Can anyone suggest a sensibly priced ADSL router that supports VLAN please and it easy to set up.

Currently using a standard domestic router, but would like to split the connection and open up some APs to visitors. Someone suggested that VLAN was a good way to go about it by partitioning off the port which leads to the APs into it's own virtual LAN.

Just about any Thomson / Technicolor router (TG582n) will do what you ask. It's not that easy though, you need to use telnet cli commands.
Some details here:

Or a simpler method if you just need to split off one ethernet port:

If you are only after  guest access facility, with the ability to fence off your normal home network from your guests, then the NETGEAR DGND 3300 will offer what you need. A problem I had on my router when I used MAC address filtering on the wifi, containing 15 addresses, the router started playing up by losing settings. I put the problem down to lack of memory in the router, and found by getting rid of some of the MAC addresses it solved the problem. I now rely on an extensive encryption key, and don't bother with the MAC address filtering............

The Zyxel VMG8324 should let you do this from within the webGUI although its not anything Ive personally tried.  - The instruction manual can be found here

As suggested by benji, it also has guest wifi access which may be the easiest way to do things.

Cost is usually about £100 so its not particularly cheap, but it has a pretty powerful GUI with lots of config options without having to go into the CLI... plus because its an ADSL/VDSL modem/router, its future proof.

Its currently on offer at Eclipse for £74 inc VAT & PP, which is a pretty good price considering what you get for your money.

The Billion 8800NL also allows you to set up guest networks.

Thanks guys. Currently protecting private network using Windows Homegroup but it's probably not as secure as it might be so thought a hardware option might be best.

Wifi access is from two different APs, one is the main router, but there is an external AP I'm using for guests so it's more a wired method than just guest wifi on the router.

Never understood telnet so I'd rather stick to a browser interface if possible.
