Vista, How to change the Boot Sequence
« on: February 15, 2008, 01:43:37 PM »

With recently installing Vista on a second partition D:, XP on the original C: partition.

Everything works well, except when loading if I don't select XP to load to (Earlier Version of Windows) it automatically boots into Vista.

How can I reverse this so it automatically boots to XP, with Vista being the option I would have to select manually to boot into.

Thanks

When I did dual boot some months ago I downloaded a progr from the internet which could be used to edit the Vista boot loader information. I cannot recall what it was but will have a peek and see if it is still lying around anywhere...

In XP you could edit it in system properties but I dont think this can be done in Vista.

If you look in XP, under System Properties > Advanced > [Startup and Recovery] Settings can you edit the options there or not? You mgiht not be able to if it is using the Vista boot loader.

*Edit*

This the 3rd party prog you could create/delete entries, edit names and change boot order etc

Text from XP System Properties > Advanced > [Startup and Recovery] Settings:

;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.

So no that does not look like an option.
I did have the writeup saved at one time, but thought, "I'm never going to need it" so got rid of it, unfortunately I can't remember where I got it from.

At the moment, the BCDEDIT looks a little complicated, but I will give it a try shortly.

I have tried running BCDEDIT from a comand prompt but no joy I'm afraid, it just does not recognise BCDEDIT

The program I have used is EasyBCD.

You can use it from in Vista to detect other Windows installations and rearrange all the details how you please. I used it myself when installing XP dual boot (when Vista came pre-installed on the machine months ago) and it works great.

WOW,
That was, Quick, Easy and Painless.

It took all of 30 seconds to load the program, (then had a little look around) selected "Change Settings"

1. Selected "Global Settings", Defaults OS: and changed it to Windows XP followed by "Save Settings"

2. Selected "Entry-Based Settings", Choose an OS to change the associated settings, then typed in the name I wanted to be displayed (Microsoft Windows XP) instead of "Earlier Version of Windows"  followed by "Save Setting"

Thats it, job done, time taken 20 seconds max.

(In fact it took much longer to type this comment than to change the two settings themselves)
Thanks for the EasyBCD link and other advice give to everyone.
