Infinity 2 Router + Modem Speed
« on: February 15, 2015, 03:48:42 PM »

I hope to get some advice from the experts here.

My setup is Infinity 2, HG 612 modem and Netgear WNR2000 router running DD-WRT. The Netgear router gives more control and better WiFi than the supplied Home Hub 3. I use the WiFi for the TV and laptops. My main pc is ethernet connected to the router.

A speedtest on the ethernet connected pc gives 56Mb/s down and 17Mb/s up.

On plugging the same pc into the Lan 1 port of the HG 612 I get 64Mb/s down and 18Mb/s up.

So, I'm getting quite some slowdown through the router.

I'd like to get more speed, as my line is up to it.

If I get a combined modem router, would I gain anything? If so, any model recommendations?

Alternatively, I could buy a faster router, but again, which one?

I could just buy kit to try, but I don't want to spend £s to find no improvement.

Also, as I really only want the extra speed on my wired pc, is it feasible to unlock the HG 612 and use the second LAN port at the same time as LAN 1? In other words, would it work with the pc in Lan 1 and the router in Lan 2 and have both access the internet at the same time?

last question: no you'd need a switch connected to lan1. Lan2 has no net connectivity.

I'd unlock your HG612 first anyhow, just for the reason to be able to get some decent line stats.

It should be set up as per the image here.
One you have some linestats then you'll have some figures to be able to compare with other modem/routers.

Theres a list of all the available for purchase in the UK,  Combined VDSL2 modem/routers.
Personally I'd recommend one with a Broadcom based chipset.
