Amusing comments on IPV6
« on: February 08, 2008, 10:57:23 AM »

Open a command line window and type:

whois -r POEM-RIPE55-SONG

or point your browser at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y36fG2Oba0

[For anyone who doesn't know what this is about, IPV6 is the new(ish) internet addressing system which will provide vastly more addresses than the present IPV4 system. The world is gradually running out of internet addresses, although this isn't happening as quickly as was feared a year or two ago.]

Excellent lyrics... and yeah I found myself singing along too :D

I remember the predictions from around 2000 that IPv4 addresses would soon run out within a couple of years..  I think the latest is now around 2010.
I remember back then struggling to get my head around cidr - and IPv6 - well that just made my brain explode..

You forgot to add :

"While preferably not drinking liquid at the same time"

Chorus....(those silent will be shot)

IPv6 isn't that bad kitz. At the very least you should try having a play with the WindowsXP ipv6 stack on your local network - you can't break your existing ipv4 network by doing this ;)

tbh I havent looked at it since I did one of the degree Networking modules which would have been around 2002/2003.
I do remember looking at all the numbers and going OMG!

I have this problem you see..
once upon a time I used to be able to remember account nos and sort codes real easy...
but these days I struggle to remember phone nos and sometimes even have to think wth is my IP address again?

IPv6 will be perfect for you then as you can leave leading zeros out :)

Eg ipv6.aaisp.net.uk is actually 2001:08b0:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001 whch would be written as 2001:8b0::1

See, nice & simple :P

Actually I just remembered that Windows XP users can get IPv6 functioning using IPv4 tunnels and 2002::/16 prefix 6to4 addresses.
