My attempts to use Google DNS servers
« on: January 10, 2015, 12:55:25 PM »

I am confused! More than my usual permanent state, were that possible!  ::)
Last evening I experimented with Google DNS because Chrome had tended to be leisurely with Plusnet’s. So following an article on changing applicable to Windows 7, I did what follows.
•   In Network and sharing>Change Adapter Settings> Wireless Network Connection> Right click>Properties I selected IPV4.
•   Checked Use the following DNS server addresses and as primary server 8.8.8.4; secondary Plusnet’s 212.159.6.10
•   Selected Validate settings on exit. Clicked OK

However in my Billion 8800NL the Primary DNS Server is 212.159.13.49, the secondary 121.159.13.50. Neither do they agree with what is above, nor the settings prior to my efforts, which were 212.159.6.1 212.159.6.10. Moreover 121.159.13.50 appears to be related to Korea Telecom.

What can be going on, and where in all that am  I the cause?! What have I omitted or done incorrectly? Plee...ase! :help:

I thought the Google DNS servers were 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4  :-\ (that works OK for me on W7  ;) )

It's perfectly OK to have different DNS servers in the router and in your PC. The servers specified in the router are used for its own internal purposes (such as time synchronisation). In addition, if the router is configured to act as a DNS relay, then connected equipment can use this by specifying the IP address of the router as the primary DNS server. In your case, you've specified Google DNS servers in your PC, so the values in the router are not used by the PC. (As HP says, make sure you get the Google DNS server addresses right - they are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).

Just to add that there have been multiple reports of sluggish, probably DNS-related, web page loading on the PN forums. Including by me.
A common fix seems to be to do what you have, define DNS in the device/PC rather than refer to the router.
I've decided to bypass PN's DNS and use Google, but even defining the PN DNS in my PC clears the problem, it seems to be something going on in the router DNS services.

That said, the reports I've seen are generally when using PN-supplied TG582N routers........

Thanks guys! Now it's Google in PC and PN DNS server in router. I'll get my Queen's telegram by the time I am anywhere near your levels! :D Still cannot see how the router got the 121.159.13.50 address though.

Typo? It's 212.159.13.50.

Actually 121 is correct, and what router shows. I too could not believe it! (Richard Wilson noises-off)!

But was that manually entered at some in the past, or   is the router set to automatically obtain DNS servers from the ISP?

I too suspect a typo when the settings were input into the router at some point

212.159.13.50 is Plusnets secondary DNS server
121.159.13.50 like mentioned above is just a general IP issued to customers of Korea Telecom.

I just realised what you may be getting at, so I removed google DNS and changed my router & PC to 'obtain automatically  to see what PN returned.. then I ran a dns check to see on all the DNS servers that were available.

Test ran for 6,400 queries and found a total of 6 servers:

212.159.6.130
212.159.6.129
212.159.6.117
212.159.6.114
212.159.6.118
212.159.6.113

which is interesting in the fact that 'auto' isnt using any of their known and listed DNS servers which are:

212.159.13.49
212.159.13.50
212.159.6.9
212.159.6.10

Mine is set up as per attached now. Before this thread the servers addresses were 212.159.6.10 and 212.159.6.9. User router settings has AFAICR always been unticked.

212.159.6.130
212.159.6.129
212.159.6.117
212.159.6.114
212.159.6.118
212.159.6.113

These are the actual IP's of the caching servers I believe.

which is interesting in the fact that 'auto' isnt using any of their known and listed DNS servers which are:

212.159.13.49
212.159.13.50
212.159.6.9
212.159.6.10

And these are the virtual IP's set up on the load balancers.

When configuring a client to query our DNS caches, you'd use one or more of the latter set of IP's.

I realise that this is an old thread, but I thought I would just add a summing up of what's going on for the benefit of users who may come to this thread later.

Your router gives out addresses of DNS servers to devices on the LAN (via a mechanism called DHCP, IPv6 is different) so configuring your router with incorrect DNS IPs will cause problems.

Your PC's own DNS settings override whatever the router is giving out. It's best to leave the PC or whatever's settings blank, and let the router configure all the machines so there is less work to do.

In IPv6 you can sometimes get DNS settings from the ISP - by a variety of methods - but routers however sometimes need DNS settings to be set up within them my hand. In IPv6 it is possible for a router to give out DNS server addresses to machines on the land, but the router needs to be set up correctly and sometimes to be told to give out this information.
