replace BT master socket
« on: December 23, 2014, 10:42:28 PM »

Hi,

Need to replace my parents BT master socket. I believe its wiring wrong as broadband has always been plugged into test plug behind plate. Now its line is cracking & sometimes not working at all.

Dont have any knowledge about wiring? Theres a black copper wiring and the white phones wires behind plate? Pictures below.

The new sockets dont have screws connections to connect black coppers wires? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

You will need a punch down tool to connect the incoming black copper wires to the new NTE5 they are called IDC terminals marked A & B and have a picture of the tool for your reference.

If those wires are over 0.5mm in diameter you may have to crimp those to short lengths of 0.5mm wire and then terminate those on the IDC
If the insualtion is thick and heavy you will need to strip back the insulation as dispite IDC being insulation displacement connection, if the insulation is too much the connectors would not be up to the job of cutting though the insulation or distort away from the wire so if it does contact it may be a losse fit or suffer from HR dis'

You will need a punch down tool anyway for the IDC terminals on the frontplate for extensions though if the two black incoming wires are to thick for the backplate IDC terminal then you should purchase the NTE5 backplate screw type.
