SHINE a light!
« on: December 10, 2014, 07:11:49 PM »

So there I was, sitting there on a cold, cold December morning, just happened to be looking at my VDSL stats and noticing an increase in FEC's, CRC and ES counts, well, increasing at a rate they normally do not do.

Now, it just so happened that the door was open from my study and from there I could hear the thermostat in the hall clicking in an out as the CH competed with the outside world in trying to keep me warm. Wait I thought, is this related.... Oh yes! Everytine the thermostat clicked a second or two later the count increased, of course I was polling the router manually to see if it tied up. Now, this wouldn't normally be so bad but for some reason yesterday it was, perhaps becuase I had the doors open, whatever...

Well, a trip to Maplin and a suppressor fitted has seen the count return to its normal level. 8)

That's the one.

Could find quite a few places to install these from fridge themos to oil burner termos and light switches.

Thanks for your helpful thread  ;D

That is the sort of item for which Konrado5 might find a use.

What gets me is that the thermostat is a Honeywell programmable beast and they are not cheap. You would have thought that a mfr like Honeywell would fit a suppressor as standard, it's not as though it's never been heard of before.

I think it's about time I learnt this electrical stuff.

Turning the image through 180 degrees, I am surprised to read 250VAC. I would have thought a greater voltage rating would be more appropriate . . .  :-\

Yes you would have thought that most switch's would have this component incorporated into the device as standard these days, but it's says to me that BroadBand Tech was not taken into account during there tests and light switch's and termostats were around before ADSL & FTTC  became the norm in a household ;)

It's rated to be used on 250v AC , you have a resistor in series too. It's a very long time since I was at college or would start giving you the formula to calculate the voltage across the capacitor which is .1uF during a spike.

UK made too, so add 10% to the V rating, at least it was when I used to work on power supplies on a daily basis.

It's sufficient for domestic purposes.

Now I don't want are fellow Kitizens being electrocuted during this install so please read the following article  ;) http://www.russandrews.com/article-Fitting-a-Contact-Suppressor-suppressor_instructions.htm

Which is fine, the only thing it does not tell you is to isolate the circuit first, and THEN check it is dead using at the bare minimum a neon tester. Also, put some sleeving  over the suppressor legs.

Finally, try and source them from somewhere other than maplin.

Try Farnell or RS, I only used Maplin because they were close to me and I was in a hurry, paid way over the od

Do not forget your Door Bell  :hmm: if it's a good old 'trembler type' ! .
I fitted a 3 volt Vintage one (WW2  ;) ex government surplus ) last week and just put small capacitor across the contacts.(both out on my 'junk' box ).

Hmmm.. just checked the price at Farnell for a .1uF/100Ω suppressor, there's only pennies difference between thier price and Maplins.

Maplins I take it back, you are not robdogs, well not in this instance!

OK, now I have the bit between my teeth!

Still seeing some errors, not as many, but they are still counting occasionally when the CH kicks in. I have ordered a Delta suppressor for the pump, and a suppressor for the boiler, stangely the mfr do a kit for that ( WHY NOT FIT THE DAMN THING IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!! ).

Rant over...
