Sorry for the back-to-back post but am unable to edit my last post due to time limitations.
However, just another update on this problem.
Earlier this evening I enabled the 'Touchpad' on this laptop which is also the machine I have had the cursor problem with, I usually use a usb mouse and therefore disable the touchpad, but because of what seemed to be another hopefully one-off problem I enabled the touchpad and the original problem of the jumping cursor restarted and again as soon as I have now disabled it the problem has disappeared.
So one more possible solution to the original problem, although with what I assume will be a different driver.
