ADSL Connection Problems With HG612 Modem And Static IP's.
« on: December 04, 2014, 11:36:34 PM »

ADSL Connection Problems.
ADSL line in to house (underground all the way to the exchange !)>NT5 v1 Master socket>DSL lead into modem (replaced today Made no difference !).

Where do I start  :hmm:
Going back a few months I was using a Netgear DG634GT modem and I was getting a lot of disconnections, I never did find out why but I put a Speedtouch 536 modem and it seem to make it better for some time, then started the disconnections again and I was given the HG612 so I unlocked that and have been using it for about 4 weeks and it seemed a good stable connection on my long line (4.5Kl) and have been getting up to 3.5Mbps Down (which is good !) .
With problems with DSLstats  http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=14747.msg275433#msg275433
I re-did the un-locked firmware again on Monday and it took me 20 hours to get back on the internet  :'(
 (Tuesday afternoon! ) .

Today I could not get on the internet, DSL seems up and I could use the web access to the HG612 modem.
looking in the logs I found lots and lots of :-
2014-12-4 14:38:11 Notice 104500 DSL deactivate
2014-12-4 14:37:58 Notice 104505 PPP dial-up succeed

This is only a small sample.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think there is a problem with my line ?, Modem, Line card at exchange. ??????
Shall I get my ISP to look into it ?.

Would going on fastpath help with my line ?.

As I have until Oct 2015 until my contract runs out I have got to make do with ADSL. >:D

Just a small observation and my recommendation.

Enter the HG612's GUI and under the Basic ---> DSL tab, untick all options and just leave ADSL2 selected. Reference.

(I note that you are currently connected in G.Dmt mode but ADSL2 mode would be more beneficial.)

Looking at the log snippet that you have posted, I see the PPPoA session repeatedly restarted as the DSL is deactivated and reactivated at approximately every 25 seconds.  :o  As to the latter, I do not have a clue.

As I mentioned yesterday, I'm interested in your IP address assignments. They may be causing you network problems.

I only ever see those huge upstream synchs for ADSL1 on those IFTN 71C8 DSLAMs. Coincidence?

Are you locked to negotiating ADSL1 by any chance?
Is your DS SNRM fluctuating a lot?

It was not more beneficial because it would not connect. :'(
I logged in to the modem made the changes turned it off for a few hours while I did some work switched it back on and left it over lunch, checked again later No connection  >:D in the logs it had not even tried as it said 'no signal'  :o.
I put it back to G.DMT and after powering it off for 35 minutes checked again and I have internet again.

With all these connection and dis-connections I would have thought that DLM would have kicked in by now  :hmm:

Just telnet into HG612.

you're on a very long line, have you considered trying a billion 7800n? I was able to get my 3mbit line to 5mbit and only one disconnect a week with a 7800n.  (Had phyr enabled and was running at 1dB SNR). that modem seemed to be really good for long lines. Also I used to use a siemens speedstream 4100 when my line was bad, and it virtually never dropped the line no matter how bad things got. At one point my line became so noisy that my sync speed dropped to 92kbps and the speedstream was still holding the line up.

Enter the HG612's GUI and under the Basic ---> DSL tab, untick all options and just leave ADSL2 selected. (I note that you are currently connected in G.Dmt mode but ADSL2 mode would be more beneficial.)

O.k., so you have tried the experiment and it failed. As the line seems to be very temperamental, it would therefore be best to ensure that all of the other "tick boxes" on the page (all other than G.Dmt) are cleared. Don't allow the HG612 to have the opportunity to attempt to select any other mode.

I only ever see those huge upstream synchs for ADSL1 on those IFTN 71C8 DSLAMs. Coincidence?

Are you locked to negotiating ADSL1 by any chance?
Not too sure what you mean, please expand.

On this HG612 I have seen it go from 12 down to 3dB in 12 hours.

iirc mike is on a 20CN exchange so only g.dmt /adsl.. and why adsl 2/2+ wont work.
It will also be why the upstream is syncing at 448 despite showing 968 available.   Although IMHO they should put him on Max Premium as he's paying business rate.

Any idea what all these hundreds of disconnection and re-connection are ?. why has DLM not kicked in ?.
Is it time to contact my ISP ? Do you think I could get them to get a bit more out of my long line ?.

I dont think so.   I think it may be to do with the way you have the modem configured - see post I just made in the other thread.

I cant figure out if you are using the HG612 just in modem mode or as a modem router and whats on the LAN side and whats on the WAN side when it comes to the IPs.  The fact that you are having difficulties getting DSLstats makes me think that its something to do with the way your network is physically set up.  Those error messages are coming too quick and fast

>> why has DLM not kicked in

It could be that the line has a valid sync, but its the PPP  ISP login)  that is bouncing around.   The modem controls the sync speed, the router controls the PPP session.  Ive never used a smoothwall so dont know enough know how it all slots in with the static IP block that you use.

On your upstream yes.   It looks like your ISP has you on maxdsl that has a limitation of 448 for the upstream.  Max premium (business) should sync at up to 832 upstream.

8 Static ip's 6 useable x.y.z.104 <Network---------- TO---------- x.y.z.111<Broadcast IP      subNet mask 255.255.255.248

<Internet>x.y.z.104 > <WAN> x.y.z.105 No..NAT..Modem..LAN Address (Note...Modem LAN Not Home network LAN as these are different !) x.y.z.110 ><x.y.z.108 Smoothwall+NAT 192.168.0.1 + DMZ ip's > Home network

Colour code = :-
Red = Internet
Blue = HG612 set as a non NAT Bridge Modem using LAN 1 to smoothwall box.
Green = Smoothwall hardware firewall uses NAT to do the routing and DMZ
Orange = Home/Garden network both RJ45 LAN and WiFi using 4 access points.

Let me take you back a few years to one of my first posts .. ;D
