Broadband speed what to expect ?
« on: November 23, 2014, 12:23:27 AM »

What download speed I should expect with these stats. Both MBps and Kb/s ?
It is not a "Upto 8Mpbs" package but a 8Mbps package.

ADSLMode: ADSL_2plus
                           Downstream    Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis):   On                     On
SNR Margin (1 dB):   28.5                     11.1
Attenuation (1 dB):   10.0                     8.5
Output Power (1 dBm):   0.0                     12.6
Attainable Rate (Kbps):   27308             1156

    Downstream   Upstream
Rate (Kbps):   8191   1020

Have you tried the Kitz calculator it gave me a pretty close estimate  ;)

After allowing for overheads... about 7.2 Mbps.

The amount of overheads depend on which protocols are used in your ISPs network, Im just basing it upon what youd expect in the UK.

By protocol you mean
ADSL2+
ADSL  G.Dmt  etc ?

Edit:

It is PPPOE with 8 81 VPI VCI.

BT in the UK uses PPPoA - so ATM has its own overheads.  Its very hard to say exactly what you should be receiving, but without doing lots of calculations, then 7.2Mbps is a rough guide of what you should be seeing.

There will be several overheads, TCP/IP, PPPoE etc, so most people just use either 11.5% or anything up to 15% to get a rough idea.  Theres also things like MTU which can affect throughput.   I doubt if anyone will be able to give you an exact figure. :/

Thanks,
a rough estimate is more than enough. what will be the download speed at 7.2MBps in Kb/s ?

Depends if you're on ATM or PTM.

PTM being vastly superior.

I think you may mean Mbps and the figure you are looking for would be Kbps.  When it comes to speed just multiply by 1000.
The conversion between bits and Bytes is 8 bits = 1 Byte.  Although (afaik) not officially standardised, most people use the /s or /sec to make it a bit clearer when using Bytes with speed.  Its the upper case and lower case b/B that is very important.

So 7.2 Mbps =  7200 Kbps  [7.2 * 1000]
 or 7.2 Mbps =  900 KB/sec [ (7.2 * 1000) /8 ]

7.2 MBps =  57.6 Mbps or 7200 KB/s or 57600kbps [7.2*8], [7.2 * 1000] & [ (7.2*1000)*8] respecitively

It gets even more complicated when talking about bits and Bytes when it comes to data storage & memory when 1MB = 1024 KB, So 7.2MB of hard disk space would actually be 7373 KB  ::)

It gets even more complicated than that unfortunately. The IEC standard (which is accepted by most other standards organisations, but not JEDEC apparently) says:

1 MB (megabyte) = 1,000,000 bytes
1 MiB (mebibyte) = 1024 x 1024 = 1,048,576 bytes

and so on for other prefixes. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mebibyte
