« on: November 22, 2014, 12:47:32 AM »

I'm trying to test a java based software for my daughter to use for uni work.
Running this in a terminal I get this error message --- any help please.

This? http://www.jwatcher.ucla.edu/index2.htm

Did you download the correct version?

Does Java even work? Try this in terminal java -version
Or http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp

I stopped using Oracle Java a long time ago, in favour of OpenJDK 7 and 8 and the IcedTea browser plugin. This combination hasn't ever let me down, although I have to admit that I don't have a lot of use for Java.

There is only one Linux download.

On another 32Bit machine java test machine =
Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 71).

Also I can sort of start the installation but it stalls at step 3 out of 5 and I have to kill the process !.

I have got some part of it to run 'jwathcer Data Capture' menu screen , there seem to be files used I have never seen before and it does say about them in this faq  http://www.jwatcher.ucla.edu/jwfaq.html
.
My daughters dissertation relies on this software and its not looking good using this software under PCLinuxOS  :(

Well I tried it on Fedora 20 64-bit and it hangs in the same place on the installer however I dont run Oracle Java either. What it did do was to install some stuff which will start OK but then it asks questions I dont understand about focal something or other!

I recommend suggesting the university switch to software that isn't written in java. It's slow, bloated and has more holes than a sieve. Not to mention all the other issues it causes for computers that have it installed. I'm now just past a year without java at all, and I'm so much better off without it.

IMAO, Java is an excellent language to learn, and good to have on a CV too.

Anybody who has an Android phone will be running software written in Java every day.

I just tried that link and I had to acknowledge some security questions but it ran OK - I dont have Oracle Java installed but the OpenJDK version installed.

I do not have  OpenJDK in my package manager (synaptic) did you download it ?.
I have re-loaded all the main 'java' files and I have now got 'JWatcher' to install.

Got two days to try and work out how to use the software now before my daughter comes home and will want it installing on her uni laptop. :'(

Just an update on this if anyone googles it. ;)
'J Watcher' would not work on PCLinuxOS so the uni said try 'Tracker' which works well and my daughter has been using it ok.
