Billion BiPAC 8800AXL
« on: November 16, 2014, 09:07:40 PM »

Looks a nice compact device...anyone tried one?

The Billion BiPAC 8800AXL Triple-WAN Simultaneous Dual-Band VDSL/ADSL2+ WiFi Router w/ 3G/4G support is a wireless AC broadband router that delivers wireless speeds as fast as 1.3 gigabits per second. Based on a Broadcom chipset, this Billion BiPAC 8800AXL Triple-WAN Simultaneous Dual-Band Router supports ADSL2+ and is fibre-ready, using the internal VDSL modem to hook directly into the FTTC line as soon as it comes to your house. This Billion BiPAC 8800AXL Triple-WAN Simultaneous Dual-Band Router also has four additional gigabit Ethernet ports plus two USB 2.0 ports, allowing for 3G/4G modem connectivity, print serving or Network-Attached Storage.

Key Features
Built on the latest 802.11ac standard for blazing fast dual-band WiFi speeds
Triple-WAN ports for VDSL/ADSL2+ fallback and 3G/4G LTE USB modem connectivity.
Four (4) 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports, one (1) 10/100/1000 Gigabit WAN port
Two (2) USB ports for print server, NAS, DLNA , and 3G/4G LTE USB modem
WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) for easy setup with WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK encryption
SNR adjustments to achieve highest sync speeds between the router and the exchange
QoS for traffic prioritisation and bandwidth management, with LAN/WAN traffic monitoring
SOHO firewall security and Auto failover and failback support
Supports WDS repeater function
Ultra-fast networking
The Billion BiPAC 8800AXL WiFi router supports the new IEEE 802.11 ac wireless standard, which means it can deliver wireless networking as fast as 1.3 gigabits per second (Gb/s). This is spanned over the 2.4GHz frequency and the less congested 5GHz frequency. The Billion BiPAC 8800AXL WiFi router is also backwards compatible with existing 802.11b/g/n devices.

Dual-band high-throughput
Wireless AC provides high-throughput WLAN speeds by taking advantage of frequencies on the 5 GHz band. The Billion BiPAC 8800AXL achieves its speed from 300 megabits per second on the 2.4GHz frequency range and 1300 megabits per second on the 5GHz range.

Designed for fibre
With Wireless AC and gigabit Ethernet ports, the Billion BiPAC 8800AXL WiFi router is designed for the age of Fibre Broadband. Its Broadcom chipset means it will deliver fast reliable Internet access over ADSL2+ until fibre arrives. Should you wish to use this router with a Fibre Broadband connection such as FTTC BT Infinity, you can plug directly in to the router as the router has an internal VDSL modem. This means you will have a neat and tidy one box solution for Fibre Broadband.

The lower spec 8800NL is very good, excellent adsl/vdsl with a broadcom chipset and works with dslstats, in fact it is boring --everything just works!.   It is a very safe choice if it meets your needs.  The 8800AXL looks like a higher spec version of the same base model so unless they have messed up it should be even better.

if it has broadcom chipset go for it.

But why dont you guys do what I did?

Clearly you like the asus as a router hence using it.

Buy the much cheaper 8800nl.
Configure it as a modem only.
Use an ac66 or ac68 or ac87 with it, and you also wont lose any lan ports as the 8800nl can be access for both gui and stats using a secondary lan subnet on the wan port (which I am doing).

sell the crappy dsl-ac6X

got one today. initial impressions - fantastic. 12ms ping, previously 17ms with HG612. 80000/20000. (seems to have disabled DLM that lowered me to 67mbit on the HG612)

so, who wants to buy an unlocked HG612?  ;)

Hi oranj,

Welcome to kitz.

You mentioned being lowered to 67mbit, this is exactly what has happened to me since G.INP has been enabled. [Sync is 66999 / 20000]

Please explain what you mean by :

I am most interested in what you did to convince DLM to give back 80/20 on your line.  ;D

TIA

Its probably not connected, but I didn't have the latest firmware (was running v.28) on my 612 when G.Inp was switched on and with that the maximum I could get was 67/20 even though the attainable rate was much higher and the modem had connected at 74/20 before G.Inp was turned on. Since updating to the firmware from August 2014 (v.30 at the top of this forum) I am up to 77.5/20

Interesting! I'm on G.INP now with my HG612 and I seem to be fixed at 66999/20000 too even though my snr is hovering around 8dB. Was a similar or slightly lower sync before G.INP was enabled but at 6dB

I did nothing, I just plugged it in and it connected at 80/20. Previously the HG612 was at 67xxx/19999, as DLM kicked in 2 weeks ago for reasons unknown. Before that the Huawei always connected at 79999 or near enough. I dont know the stats on this yet, going to try DSLstats in 8800NL mode.

This router is very fast, 11ms pings, sites load instantly. So far so good. The web interface is the most detailed I've ever seen on a home router. But
this is my first Billion so maybe they are all like this. Looking forward to trying UMTS/LTE fallback.

Hi oranj,

Welcome to kitz.

You mentioned being lowered to 67mbit, this is exactly what has happened to me since G.INP has been enabled. [Sync is 66999 / 20000]

Please explain what you mean by :
Quote
(seems to have disabled DLM that lowered me to 67mbit on the HG612)
I am most interested in what you did to convince DLM to give back 80/20 on your line.  ;D

TIA

Its probably not connected, but I didn't have the latest firmware (was running v.28) on my 612 when G.Inp was switched on and with that the maximum I could get was 67/20 even though the attainable rate was much higher and the modem had connected at 74/20 before G.Inp was turned on. Since updating to the firmware from August 2014 (v.30 at the top of this forum) I am up to 77.5/20

This could be significant. I had the older firmware too and the attainable was 95mbit but sync @ 67mbit. I suspect older HG612 fw doesn't like G.Inp..
