I'm not in a position to try right now.

But I have the idea firmly fixed in my mind that it is no longer possible (without skulduggery)  to update XP via Microsoft, even if just trying apply or re-apply 'old' updates that predate the withdrawal of XP support.

May be wrong, but that is the way I think things are.    :(

Working fine here.  ;D
Just rebooted my main system (first time in a fair while) into XP; it's dual-boot XP/W7x64.
The web-based Microsoft Update didn't work but the automatic one (managed via control panel) kicked in after a few seconds.
It just did 2 updates, one for Silverlight, the other the November Malicious Software Removal Tool (which is really a scan).
Time to reboot to the real world....

Back on Windows 7 now, so yes it looks like XP is still updating.   8)
Whether the error I got doing it manually via the web is temporary or permanent I've no idea.

Note, I also have a "skulduggery" XP system , mentioned above, and the web interface works on that, or did when I posted the other day.  :-X

Thanks for all the input, but for myself seeing as I have now discovered the main problem I had I can't see myself going to all the trouble of a complete restore, especially with still not knowing for definite if all of the previous updates would still be automatically downloaded and installed via the Windows Update feature.

So that's it for me, or at least for now, but once more, thanks for the input.

A quick follow up in case it's of use to anyone - Microsoft Update on Windows XP is now working again on my XP machine.

I've just successfully run it, and it offered me the November Malicious Software Removal Tool.

So, it would seem that anyone considering re-installing Windows XP can once more use the Microsoft Update tool to apply all the outstanding patches and driver updates, at least for now.  (No new updates since April, of course)

Thanks,

I was talking with my local computer guy earlier this week and he said exactly the same, which was (as you say) all previous updates including services patches are still downloading as before.
