TalkTalk Fibre Large upload speed ?
« on: November 13, 2014, 03:30:33 AM »

I'm on TalkTalk Fibre Large 80/20, to begin with I was getting about 11Mbps upload, this only lasted for the first few months. Over the next couple of months it decreased to about 8Mbps, and has stayed at this for 3 or 4 months.

The current estimates based on address are as follows

BT Wholesale                     Downstream Line       Upstream Line
                                       Rate(Mbps)               Rate(Mbps)

FTTC Range A (Clean)          65.4   48.1                19    12.6
FTTC Range B (Impacted)     55.6   32.4                19    8.7

AFAIK the HG533 router has no stats when in FTTC mode and I've read the HG612 modem needs to be unlocked before you can get the stats from it, is there any easier way to get line sync speed, etc ?

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1415849269&v=23324189

Is the FTR for FTTC Upstream still the highest of 22.5% of Downstream or 2Mbps ?

that upstream is not clean throughput,. I am guessing your sync is higher but its only a guess.

even if your sync is 10mbit up, I wouldnt be happy with that test result.

also why no single threaded result?

You could try using the BT Performance tester to get your IP profile

http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/

When you have that divide by .9679 and you should get a rough idea of your sync speed.

That's because I suspect they used http://labs.thinkbroadband.com/ispa/ which is their new beta version of the tester.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I've wasted so much time on the phone to talktalk  :(

http://speedtest.btwholesale.com

Download Speed (Mbps):  48.49      48.03      48.92

Upload Speed (Mbps):      7.63        7.52       7.47

Ping Latency(ms):           28.13      33.38      62.50

So if my maths is right, approx sync 50.09 Mbps down and 7.79 Mbps up. That would suggest I should be getting 11 Mbps or more upstream.

When logged in to thinkbroadband, I get the single threaded test results

not logged in I get

Has anyone been able to get line stats from talktalk ? Surely they should be able to get them from BT and pass them on. I'll give this a try first and if no luck there will get a second modem to unlock. (don't want to risk bricking the current one as I have no spare)

Thanks to everyone for your help so far.

Hmm  I just had a thought, normally those on BT can use the advanced test which gives the IP profile, from which we calculate the actual sync speed.   Because TT is GEA FTTC I dont think it will allow you to continue to the point where you put your phone number in and return a result, because your traffic doesn't traverse the BTw network :-[

So the only way you are going to find out for sure is either using a hacked HG612 or your own modem router.  TT should be able to have access to your line stats, but I doubt they will give them as that may just open the floodgates.

It is correct that a user of TT's FTTC service can not obtain such a result but it is incorrect to say that it is due to "TT is GEA FTTC". Any service provider of a FTTC product is delivering Openreach's Generic Ethernet Access, part of Beatie's Next Generation Access portfolio.

Here, in The Cattery, I take an ADSL2+ service from TT. I can use the first part of the BT Wholesale Broadband Performance Test but am unable to progress to the Further Diagnostics because TT have taken over the full MPF. It is exactly the same reason as why a user of TT's FTTC service can not make use of the Further Diagnostics.

The BT advanced test returns "Test Error" after entering phone number.

I got a spare HG612 and have unlocked it. Snapshot stats after approx 1 day.

If someone could interpret the stats for me, that would be greatly appreciated.

This is exactly what I'd like to know, I think there is a problem, but can't get Talktalk to recognise a fault. They run their tests and say everything is within spec.
I dont know about the TBB upload test.

Looking at those stats., I see your US is synchronised at 9.9 Mbps with a maximum (at the time the statistics were harvested) of 10 Mbps.

You really require an Eagle to examine and pronounce upon those results . . .

Looking at the graphs & the pbParams data, we can see that not all the tones in the upstream U2 band can be used.
Attenuation for that band doesn't look too high, but SNR (not SNRM) is too low at just under 10dB at around tone 2578, with no bit loading for a few of the previous tones.

The Bits-HIGH_RES graph would show bitloading per tone (and/or lack of) in finer detail.

The QLN plot for the U2 band is not fantastic either (-140sB is classed as a 'quiet' line & yours is reported as around -124dB or so).

The attainable rate (non-interleaved) for US is only around 10Mbps & sync speed is 9.971Mbps, so something must have deteriorated if you really were at one time able to upload at 11Mbps.

My suspicion is increased crosstalk affecting the U2 band as other users have been connected.
However, without previous stats for comparison purposes, I suppose we'll never know.

Perhaps this (or possibly, but unlikely congestion) is causing your actual upload speeds to be somewhat restricted.

FWIW, your DS is interleaved at a fairly high depth of 991, again suggesting that your connection does indeed experience some 'interference'.

Downstream is interleaved with INP of 3 (lowest level), which will likely be the difference between 57184 Kbps/50619 Kbps.  Judging from the amount of FECs then the line is benefitting from interleaving being applied in order to keep the line stable.
The downstream looks noisy in the D3 band

Upstream isnt interleaved and has no INP.  The occasional FECs just show that Error Correction is being applied 'on the fly' and the DLM seems happy with the upstream, so I dont believe its anything to do with the DLM.

Im not too happy with the U2 bitloading..  for some reason it looks too low.  Then I note that the corresponding SNR graph is also low in U2 so its no surprise that bit loading in that area isnt reaching full potential.    U1 will be lower because of PSD and PCB masks.  Why its like that in U2 Ive no idea.

Then look at the QLN for U2 - note how it seems to float over and above the D2 - D3.   QLN is supposed to show Crosstalk although RFI can seep into and impact QLN.  I find it very strange that its affecting the whole U2 band.

As it stands your line just cant sync at much more than 10Mbps on the upstream, because the line conditions wont allow.  Crosstalk over a whole band ??????????

Although the hlog shape looks ok..  it looks like it cuts off too soon implying that the router has marked these tones as unavailable due to insufficient SNR.

That U2 is rather puzzling.  I dont think I can ever recall seeing a whole band (u2) affected to such an obvious extent.   It does look like crosstalk, but its weird that there isnt even any spikeyness... and it hovers like a straight line above everything else like a magic carpet.

I suspect that the DS has been interleaved due to the noise in D3.   However... note how the DLM has left the upstream alone and no INP or Interleaving so DLM is happy with US.

Like you if I had to guess at anything Id say crosstalk..  but something still nags me that I cant put my finger on re the magic carpet effect.
