SubNet Mask
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:40:29 PM »

Question about SubNet Mask
On my block of IP's from my ISP .
x.y.z 104 to 111 with 6 usable. 255.255.255.248.
If I set up a modem to use x.y.z.105,  255.255.255.248
Set to bridge,
Would you see the WAN address x.y.z.104, 255.255.255.248 or 255.255.255.255 ?

should be .248.
That's what I was thinking.
So why do you think I was seeing 255 not 248 when I was trying this HG612 was it still NATting even with NAT turned off  :hmm:
I 'm back with my Speedtouch 536 modem/router, there is now way to see the WAN Side Subset Mask, any idea's to see what it is ?.

I'm no help with the current problem, sorry, but my main reasons for making this post are:

(1) to correct a typo in the subject line (Subset --> SubNet)
(2) to provide the link to a Wikipedia page titled Subnetwork.

G'Day tickmike,

The subnet will give you 5 usable not 6. One of the IP's will be set for the Gateway and is usually the second to last IP ie: *.*.189.49/29 which gives you *.*.189.49 - 55, however 54 becomes the GW, and because only the one IP is used then the GW subnet becomes .255. All the others are used on the network and need to know where the Gateway is, so therefore they need the .248.

Hope this helps.

The word 'bridge' can be quite confusing. I'm not sure what bridge means on the HG but given the IP setup you posted t'other day, you are not bridging anything if the HG is still providing auth, which it should be, really.

The subnet mask should always be consistent unless you're playing with loopbacks, which I don't think you are? PPP will sometimes show the WAN address as having a daft mask but you can pretty much ignore it.

What problem are you trying to solve? Is it the DSLstats thing?

No, on the HG612 it is saying the WAN  mask is  255.255.255.255 and not .248 so I have been thinking it's not correct, but I do not know why it is like that. :'(

Edit........ you can see 'br0' and 'ppp256' on my other post

I asked my isp in the end and they said it will be 255 as there is only one ip address  :o and ending in 248 on my block of ip's  ;)
