BT Openreach Huawei EchoLife HG612 2B VDSL/FTTC Modem.
« on: November 01, 2014, 05:49:21 PM »

I have been offered one of these on 'FreeCycle' Note it is a Huawei EchoLife HG612 2B
Not the latest 3B
Will this work on my ADSL until we get FTTC ?, can it be unlocked ?.

Edit.. Linking to this post about the same time as mine.

To unlock, follow Asbokid's original instructions whilst using the latest unlocked firmware image provided by Wolfy (a.k.a. Howlingwolf). Make use of the <version>_webgui firmware image.

To configure for an ADSL service start with the basic configuration, as described in the Kitz wiki.

I have collected this and powered it up, set up a static IP address on a 'test pc' of 192.168.1.100 gateway 192.168.1.1 and DNS 192.168.1.1 and it connects to the modem.
Route and ifconfig seem ok in a 'terminal' .

But I can not connect to the Web-based configuration utility. (That is if you can before it's unlocked ?)

What does this mean in the manual ?
You cannot log in to the Web-based configuration utility before you enable
the login function through TR069.

You did connect up Lan2 on the HG612 to your router also and typed 192.168.1.2?

Until the device has been unlocked, there is no means to access the GUI and the LAN2 port is unusable.

If you have a copy of the official Huawei user guide for the device, please be aware that it contains factual errors and can be misleading.

I see.
Yes I was trying to follow the official guide.

I had better start unlocking then.

It can be done on a Linux machine can it .?.

Indeed. Just download the relevant firmware image (bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui) and follow the original unlocking instructions.
